Men Are Jerks, Women Are Psychotic

Buying used books can be discouraging and hard work, but it can also be a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Thanks for the nice comment! Funny, I've not read a one of Kerouac's depressing books even though we have amassed quite a collection of them. He was such an extraordinary story teller - I'm not sure I could bear it. I've just finished reading the book I started prior to finding this collection and I can't wait to dig in!

An original Electric Prunes LP...*droool*...thank God (Dylan?) I own most of the books you've mentioned or I'd never get over not owning one of those.

"Big Sur" and "The Grapes Of Wrath" are both really good books if you want to get in the mood for suicide. Kerouac's account of his old cat companion dying, in particular, is heartbreaking.

Great article!

You know, I'm not exactly sure what it is that makes me think I won't read The Grapes of Wrath. Guess I'm just a realist - I have such a stock pile of books that I haven't gotten around to. I was a little disappointed when I remembered it is actually East of Eden I have been seeking out! Your comment has piqued my curiosity, as I do have concerns with the state of our environment... Hmmm, maybe I'll be reading it NEXT! Thanks so much for the nice comment!

A Bonanza! (Reply to this comment)

Dear movielover123: You certainly found some fine works. (I am always amazed by how many Vonnegut books are lying around; everyone in the 1970's must have bought him.)

Hang on to Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath. Within ten years, we shall have created a new Dust Bowl, and a new band of dispossessed to add to those already out there. It is inevitable, given present American indifference to the greatest threats on our horizon: over-population, Global warming, and the coming shortage of water.

You will find The Grapes of Wrath instructive.

Nice account.

Thanks Kristin! I look forward to reading the book - especially after reading so much about it.

Oh yes, you are so right! I even buy the library's old magazines. Another great used book event in our area is the annual Planned Parenthood Book Sale. An amazing array of both paperback and hardcovers as well as music and we always leave with several armloads of stuff.

Thank you so much for the nice comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the review!

Don't forget about the library book sales, either! I used to work in a public library and I found it amazing what people would give away. Of course, we were all like vultures anytime a new batch of books came in, picking out the books we wanted... My biggest find was when I managed to get the entire Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, in perfect condition and in hardcover. Yes, it can be frustrating, but those used bookstores and sales can be a real bonanza... Great review.
