Caring for soccer balls

Aug 05 '01

The Bottom Line Soccer balls are valuable to soccer players.

How exactly do you care for soccer balls?

To many of you anti-soccer fans out there, you'd think that a soccer ball is just a round ball and that there is not much you can do with it except kick it around until it gets worn out.

Well that's where you are wrong! There are a few things you can do to care for soccer balls.

One important thing about caring for soccer balls is to NEVER use the ball on concrete or rocky surfaces. You can use it on grass, astroturf or other surfaces, but the most important rule of caring for soccer balls is to NEVER use the ball on concrete or rocky surfaces. By doing this, you are ruining the ball's outer cover and once that is done, it can puncture a hole inside the ball. After that, prepare to say goodbye to the ball.

If that doesn't happen, then another bad thing will happen. The ball will simply wear out a lot (and I do mean A LOT) faster, and eventually the rocky surface will puncture a hole in the ball. I would only advise using a soccer ball on concrete or rocky surfaces, if you want to wear out a ball.

Another important rule for caring for soccer balls is to pump it frequently. After you finish playing a soccer match or finished practising with a soccer ball, immediately get out the pump and start to pump the ball. Playing soccer with flat balls is extremely difficult, hence not fun.

However, when you pump the ball, make sure you don't pump it too hard, otherwise you'll break your foot! Pump the ball so that it is not soft but not TOO hard.

If you want to clean a ball, you can either run the ball under tap water or (believe it or not) play soccer when it's raining hard! You might think mud will stick to the ball (hell, I thought that too), but I was wrong when I thought that. Hard rain actually washes all the dirt from the ball and make the ball look as good as new. To dry it, leave the ball in a hot room or under the sun (that's only if you washed the ball under tap water, or if the sun suddenly comes out after the rain has finished pouring down).

Well, I guess that's all you can say about caring for soccer balls. There's not much to say on this subject, but I hope it was helpful enough to all you soccer fans out there.
