The Bottom Line A tent is a great way to take a family vacation. Just remember that they will not hold the number of people the ads state.
Just think, now you have a family and those hotel vacations are really starting to get out of your price range. You tell yourself,camping is a great way to see the country inexpensively and my kids will love it. And you're probably right on both counts. So,now it's time to look for some equipment and the first thing you need to get is a tent. You spread out those Sunday circulars and start looking. I will give you some advise. Do not believe the tent will sleep (8 or 10 or whatever). Remember you will have your clothes,sundries and maybe some reading material,etc in that tent with you. We also have a portapotty for those middle of the night calls. We have a tent that states it will sleep 10. Maybe if you sleep on top of each other! Take the number and divide it in half and then you will probably have a comfortable tent. We sleep 4 very comfortably. You want to make sure the tent had good ventilation. Believe me,during the day,that tent will get hot and if you go into it,even for a few minutes,you will want to get out very quickly. You also need a rain flap (and make sure you put it on as soon as you set up the tent). You do not want to be out there in the pouring rain trying to get it out. We have dividers in our tent. That would be up to you. But it makes the kids feel like they have their own room and they like that. I strongly suggest that you set up the tent in your yard right before it rains and let it get "baptized". You don't want to be on a camping trip only to find out the tent is missing an essential part or that it leaks. You don't have to go to a fancy sporting goods store to get yourself a decent tent. We bought our at Kmart and it works just fine. We have not had a problem with it and I have no reason to believe it will not last for many years. This is a great time of year to look for a tent. There are many end of summer sales and you still have a few months left to go even in the northern climates to use it. So go check out those ads and get yourself a nice family tent!  |
