Hey, I really appreciate that. I've done that myself a few times where I've read something much later and wondered what my original theory was. I truly appreciate taking the time to revisit.
Cheers!

and there always is one of course, is imho MrsNormanMaine. She writes fabulous reviews, from the perspective of a delightful fictional character. But, I agree with you, I wouldn't want everyone to attempt it!

Interesting stuff... (Reply to this comment)

I felt a bit guilty reading your article, because I have done exactly that which you abhor, namely, write about myself when doing reviews - probably 'cos I'm a bit Narcissistic, and also 'cos I like to give my reviews just that 'something' which others don't have, or try and vary it somewhat. So, you'll get to know me thru my writing - I guess it's inevitable. Then again, if people don't like the way I write, they won't read me. WYSIWYG.

. . . I detect a message within your posting.
Or that just might be your style -
Or Epinions personality -
Or persona -

Ah, that must be it.
Nicely done.

I think I missed the part about the midst in our midst. But on 2nd read I found I hadn't mist it -there it was in the missed of all those words, I just hadn't seen it because of all the midst.
Thanks for the neat Review.
Enjoyed it,
Lorace (no persona - no personality - just me!)

Personality? (Reply to this comment)
by gracef
Back when I joined Epinions, "personality" was more important than writing decent review. Epinions more resembled a side show with a little bit of information thrown in than it did a consumer information site. I think that Epinions actually wanted that at the time because, regardless of how outlandish the people were, they drew in good writers and other bored people.
So some people worked very hard at being a "personality", writing off-topic reviews, leaving attacking comments, etc. It was a big shock to these people when the block lists were incorporated into Epinions because many of them found that they were blocked by the community.
I agree that an "Epinions personality" isn't important. People are who they are, and only the most skilled writer can keep up a persona for longer than six months. Sooner or later, they slip up and their true nature shows through. Since Epinions is supposed to be a consumer information site, I wouldn't trust the advice of one of these invented people anyway.
Still, I do think it's necessary for people to reveal a little about themselves in a review. I want to know if I have anything in common with the person whose opinion I am reading. That way, I know if they share my tastes. Granted, I may know tons about a person after reading several of their reviews. So that information might be "overhead" for me. However, the person who wonders in off the street isn't going to know me any more than any other reviewer. If I am the one person who hated a product, I need to give the reader a reason to believe my word over anyone else's. Giving the reader the ability to identify with me as a person just might be the "tie breaker".
