Re: This+is+a+comment (Reply to this comment)
by scmrak
As I've said to Capri (and someone else, I forget whom) I'm not convinced. Perhaps we should run a test: here's what I propose...
Take two epinions writers with WOTs of approximately the same size (to equalize "automatic" hits).
Both write opinions on the same topic -- a topic that is "outside the box" for both writers (say, yours truly reviewing a power tool).
One use only the product name in the review title, the other use a title that does not include the name.
Submit simultaneously or nearly so (equalizes time-of-day hits).
Compare hit history after a reasonable length of time.
Of course, there are many variables, such as people reading your backlist of reviews before trusting, etc.
Perhaps we should arrange a writeoff?
Thanks for the visit

Re: Enjoyed+the+review..... (Reply to this comment)

Capri:
I have no particular problem with including the name of the product in the title. I think that it's both lazy and uninformative to use only the name of the product as the title. Unless there's some form of modifying verbiage, the uninitiated cannot possibly tell whether the review is positive, negative, neutral, or just plain empty.
For what it's worth, my highest-grossing opinion (nearly 2000 non-member hits - whoopee! [that's what I get for not reviewing in the computer, family, or beauty sections; and not writing a review of the George Foreman Grill]) does not have the name of the product in the title. Yet for a while, when I entered the name of the product at google, up popped my opinion (thanx and a tip of the hat to Google!), on the first page, no less. So I'm not entirely convinced. You're welcome to keep doing it, though.
Thanks for stopping by.

Enjoyed the review..... (Reply to this comment)
by Caprig
....BUT one thing you said I have to disagree with
"In case you'd never noticed, the name of the item appears right there under the title of the review -- don't make me read it twice! At least half the fun here at Epinions is exercising your creativity. Advertising people specialize in getting our attention -- if an advertisement doesn't attract notice, it doesn't sell the product. "
I used to think the same way until I finally realized that my goals were all wrong. If you want someone to find your review that is not already aware of Epinions, then having the product name in the review will bring it up on search engines.
Since my goal is to reach consumers with extensive information to help them make buying decisions, I decided that I would pass on the obsessive creativity angle and make my reviews more accessible to the general public.
Sorry if members do not like reading the titles inclusive of product names, but in the long run, isn't the goal of Epinions as a whole to help consumers as much as possible and bring people to the site?
Other than that, your editorial was creative and interesting.
Keep up the good work,
Capri

He did it in rhyme.

But Nick, it wasn't in E-Prime! I guess we're all poets at heart, eh? Though I think I'll take a break for a while.
So far I haven't gotten any hate mail on it, so I guess everyone accepts it in the spirit of fun.

Yeah, since I already had the "scmrak" email address, I've kept this one across several sites as well. I was just curious. The street in Denver is in an area known as "The Highlands," and there is also an Argyle Place there -- a Scots theme, I take it.

Writing a long, "creative" (to use your word) review tends to be a labor of love -- I like to do the writing and it has a sort of therapeutic effect. It certainly doesn't bring in the big bucks, but I don't much care. I'm only in it for the creative outlet and for the community.
Thanks, and keep on writing!

Hadn't thought of the search engine angle -- and I'm not absolutely certain it's true; it might merely be wishful thinking. That being said, I have no objections to a creative title that contains the item's name, I just think using the name of the product as the entire title lacks a certain je ne sais quoi, if you know what I mean.
Regardless, your input is appreciated, as is your visit. Thanks for both,

Re: Who's+fanatic+here?+Moi?+I+thought+it+was+YOU,+(: (Reply to this comment)

I'm hoping 5th Grade has a different meaning in Finland from its meaning in the US -- here a fifth grader is 11 years old, and is having plenty of problems with his/her own language. Perhaps, though, that's one of the reasons most USA-type Americans are so shamefully monolingual.
Glad you like the limericks -- the spleen one was my first, and I built the rest of them to go with it.
I don't read reviews of any hardware unless I'm in the market for something new; I based the "iMac comment" on some of the people my wife works with... As I write this, I'm running Solaris on a SUN Sparc-80, so I'm not much concerned with Mac-MS/DOS conflicts ;)

Unfortunately, the moniker is from an earlier addiction to Scottish paperweights from Caithness glass company.
I started out with it on ebay and kept it across several sites due to lack of creativity and being loathe to try to remember more handles.

This is the funniest review I have read in awhile (Reply to this comment)
by Kris.
I wish I could come up with creative opinions like this.
I want to say one thing in defense of the 'boring title' people. I've noticed that reviews that have the product name in the titles get a lot more hits. I think they are more likely to come up in search engine results, so even if I make up a funny title I will usually change it later.

Who's fanatic here? Moi? I thought it was YOU, (: (Reply to this comment)
by kuuleimomi
That was definitely an awesome ride over all the trash I’ve been reading lately. And the limericks are hilarious. In my 5th grade Russian Lit. class we were asked to write one and draw a picture or something; well, on the due date I brought the whole book because since 8 was a fan of Limericks.
My favorite of yours is:
This might be the worst book that I've ever seen.
What? Read it again? I'd rather eat spleen!
I bought it last Monday,
And finished it Sunday.
Can't remember a word, but the cover is green.
Oh, and the point about us, Mac fanatics [Don't get fanatic on us (iMac reviewers take note)] is so true. I’ve noticed that and probably that’s one of the major reasons I literally love reading reviews on Mac products.
Awesome article, (:
