| mmonagle's Full Review: Whirlpool GHW9150 Front Load Washer |
My old Whirlpool (16 years old) started to leave rust stains on our clothes. Since I have a big family, I figured it had served me well. So, I decided to buy a Kenmore Front Loading washing machine. What a heap of junk!! After six days, the thing completely died. Then, the lousy service at Sears would not come to pick it up. I did more research and discovered this Whirlpool. It was delivered within two days, and the delivery guys moved the Kenmore into my dining room for me because Sears would not come back for a week to get it.
I have not one complaint about this machine. My clothes are cleaner. And, when they come out of the washer, they are practically dry, so drying time is greatly reduced. It is quiet until it reaches the spin cycle. That's when the windows literally rattle. But, for all of its pros, I can put up with the rattling.
Update 7/6/07: I still love this machine. I only have two complaints at this point. Again, the noise of the spin cycle is very loud and rattles the entire house. (On the plus side, the clothes are spun until they are almost dry!) The machine has not beaten on my clothes at all and has a great "hand wash" cycle. I use it for clothes for which the manufacturer recommends "Hand wash or dry clean" and it does a beautiful job. The other complaint is what most people mention here. It STINKS!! Mildew collects around the gasket. I leave the door open whenever it is not in use, and still the mildew. I periodically take a cloth soaked in bleach and clean the area between the gasket and machine, and it gets rid of the smell. I have friends who purchased a later model of this machine, and Whirlpool has now included a special clean cycle to take care of this problem. According to my friends, it does not smell at all when you are diligent about this clean cycle.
In my original review, I said that I could not wait for my dryer to break, so I could buy its companion. I did in October 2005, and the dryer is flawless. Not one complaint. (not to mention that because the washer spins the clothes so dry that the dryer cycle is greatly reduced.)
The large capacity is also key for me since I have four children. I used to spend days in the laundry room doing multiple loads of laundry, but now, I only have to do laundry twice a week, and usually only 2-3 loads vs. 6-7 loads. This is a time saver and an energy saver.
I love this machine!!! Can't wait until my dryer breaks and I can buy the matching dryer.
