Don,

What a marvelous style of writing you have here --- lots of fun to read.

Thanks! This place inspires all sort of things. Mostly nightmares, but some storytelling as well....;)

Hope you had a great Christmas and I wish you and yours a wonderful New Year.

And you as well - Happy New Year!

Ali,

Ewwww ew, I had to be nice to this place once, my aunt used to live in Wisconsin and she dragged me there because of its "incredible beauty."

Oh, my. Well, the ride over there is pretty - and there are lots of silos. But the place itself? Once again, on behalf of my state, I apologize for your pain.

The only reason I would drag someone up there would be if they're a stand-up comedian with some severely lacking material. Or if I really, really hated them.

Two excellent reasons. I brought disinclined there because we both needed food for our Sarcastic Personality Disorders. We really had no idea that this would be our own personal smorgasbord of tacky delights. I still mourn the lack of an appropriate gift shop, though.

Cindy,

This place sounds like the kind of place which ought to have a large collection of accordians.

Hey! I didn't see any accordions! I mean besides those undoubtedly hiding in every single giant Music Machine. I bet we missed that room, because this is Wisconsin - if there isn't an Accordion Room, there sure should be. And they should all play - by themselves and for a mere two tokens - at a deafening roar.

Oh dear, but still, I am glad you were willing to suffer for your Art- I loved this review.

Well, someone had to do it. And I have the pictures of us in front of the giant teapots - and the psychic scars - to show for my sacrifice.

I can just hear Ed laughing at this one, too- great job!

Thanks - and I hope Ed got a chuckle from it. He's been there - he can relate to the disaster that is the House on the Rock.

~shudder~

Grannie,

Just let me add my kudos to you for authoring this fantastic review.

Thank you kindly!

This is absolutely great, and I bet Ed is laughing and nodding.

Oh, I do hope so. That would make every minute spent, every dollar's worth of tokens bought, every doll carousel fright worth it. Many times over.

I loved every mischieviou word of it, and -well- millenrocket and disinclined - what an interesting and fascinating pair.

Heh. Truth be told, we had a blast. It's not a good place, but then again, we have a combined sarcasm quotient of well over 1000% - making all things tacky fodder for our Sarcastic Personality Disorders. And boy is this place tacky.....;)

Ed,

This is one of the best reviews that I have ever read. It deserves to be in New Yorker or some other high paying glossy.

Cool! Will you let the New Yorker know that?

;)

This is the kind of review that makes me feel like sticking my head in the bird bath and ending it, in one fell squawk.

Oh, no. You mustn't! What if you end up in doll carousel purgatory!?!? Don't do it! Spinning, spinning forever! Nooooooooooo........!!!!!!!!

I can only hope you will never use your powers for evil.

Hmm. That would mean I have to stop being evil, right? I don't know - it's so much fun, after all.........

Muwahahahahahaaaaa.........;)

LOL. Ya know you've been on my notifications for a while, but this review and its comments have put me over the edge. Welcome to my WOT.

Thank you kindly!

Yes, the landfill. I'll pencil that into the agenda

As long as they have no carousels there, you should be safe. Don't forget the waste water treatment plant - I hear they give tours!

Queen Stupendis,

Actually, I don't know about that. Those doll carousels, plural, looked pretty jam-packed to me. But if they suddenly install a third one, I guess we'll know our earthly work is done.

Maybe there's a way those dolls can earn their passage off the carousel - enchanting young (well, and old) damsels with their hypnotic empty eyes, drawing them closer, closer until they're caught in the whirling snare, replacing their clever seductresses, to spin in their places until they too can find damsels of their own.......

And not just any old buttered sugar cheese, but diabolical buttered sugar cheese. I hope it comes in a genuine faux real butter churn. I hear the Lord of Darkness is rather fond of frontier-themed stuff.

Tuscan Diabolical Buttered Sugar Cheese? I wonder if Sherwin-Williams has that color? In the meantime, I'll have the frond boys gather some antlers for Satan's Headboard.

You mean like, "If we had never gone to the HOTR, we might not be the property of Satan now?" Yeah, that didn't occur to me either until it was far, far too late.

Yeah, like that. But look on the bright side - now that we've lost our souls, we can do anything we want. World ruling, anyone?

Bwahahahahahahaaaaa........

Queen Suepreme,

It's all a clever trap to lure the unsuspecting. They need more cursed dolls, you see, at the House That Satan Built.

Actually, I don't know about that. Those doll carousels, plural, looked pretty jam-packed to me. But if they suddenly install a third one, I guess we'll know our earthly work is done.

I do it all for the frond boys, of course, without whom life is sooooo bland. Because I am now so much in his favor, I believe I receive extra helpings of buttered sugar cheese.

And not just any old buttered sugar cheese, but diabolical buttered sugar cheese. I hope it comes in a genuine faux real butter churn. I hear the Lord of Darkness is rather fond of frontier-themed stuff.

If we had stayed longer, we could have played "find the dolls that look most like Sue and Steph on the carousel of the damned". That would have been fun and creepy! Damn, the things you think of when it's too late......

Satanic theme park!!! ROFL!

It is truly a creepy, creepy place, where no one really knows what lurks in that carousel.....;)

Thanks for the warnings! I doubt I'd have been in Wisconson anytime soon, but in case I am, I'll be sure to pass this little gem and keep driving till I reach the Hamlet

Oh, you're welcome. Do pass this by and go to Spring Green instead. Or anywhere instead. The landfill, the waste water treatment plant - much more fun.....

Desert Damdis,

Hooray for your satanic-maw-o-rrific tribute to the House on the Rock! I'm sure our dark master will be quite pleased with your efforts to spread HOTR awareness worldwide.

Bwahahahahahahaaa! It's all a clever trap to lure the unsuspecting. They need more cursed dolls, you see, at the House That Satan Built.

Perhaps the Prince of Lies will reward you with an extra palm frond slave, or perhaps a magically never-ending bucket of cheesy curds? Truly, you are lucky to bask in his approval.

I am, the luckiest minion of them all. I do it all for the frond boys, of course, without whom life is sooooo bland. Because I am now so much in his favor, I believe I receive extra helpings of buttered sugar cheese. Yay me!

I'll be posting my review...ahh...whenever I get around to it.

You know how unhappy he gets when his servants aren't punctual - get posting damsel!

Maybe, if our fearsome lord likes mine too, there'll be a place on the doll carousel for me when I die! A girl can dream.

If we had stayed longer, we could have played "find the dolls that look most like Sue and Steph on the carousel of the damned". That would have been fun and creepy! Damn, the things you think of when it's too late......

Tim,

Well, I've seen some pretty cool places around here myself. I'd be lying to say you hadn't made a few ripples in the pool of my curiosity, but if anything, at least I have gas prices to discourage me from giving in to it!

There are so many cool and fun places to go. Why this one gets any attention is a mystery. Maybe it is enchanted! Enchanted to make people spend twenty bucks to go there!

It's fun to make fun of - but they take it so seriously! Well, I guess that's fun to make fun of, too.......;)

The tackiest horror movie ever!

Matt,

Is it wrong that this review made me interested to see this...place...in person?

No, understandable, to a degree. It's like a train wreck - you don't want to look, but you can't help it. This is like a train wreck with decorations and dollies. And carousels and Dumbledore.

Some people are just suckers for a good old-fashioned random-creepy-crap-tourist-trap, I guess!

True - like our damsels, who enjoyed their visit very much thanks to severe cases of Sarcastic Personality Disorder. Next time - Wisconsin Dells!

Munkus,

I once watched Zoolander whilst absolutely off my head on various beverages and it was one of the most disturbing experiences of my life. I swear, Ben Stiller was climbing out of the tv at one point.

Well, Ben Stiller crawling toward you at any point would be terrifying, really. Under the influence even more so.

The real question is what were you drinking and where can I get some?

I imagine this would be 1000 times worse.

Or better. It depends a lot on your opinion of tackiness and damned dolls. And music machines - can't forget the haunted music machines.

Ramona,

This place is awesome. My husband was from Wisconsin and he told me about it, so we went to see it. It has all kinds of neat things to see.

It is absolutely astounding. There's actually a passage in the Neil Gaiman book American Gods that takes place in the carousel room. I never could have imagined the reality even from that vivid description.

Alex,

I would have thought this place was in the Sierra Madre!

Unfortunately it's quite a bit closer to me than that. Maybe someday they'll ship it to the Sierra Madre...........

And a good spot for Ed, too.

Hopefully he found it a cathartic experience after being scared there himself. That doll carousel tends to stick with you until you purge it.....
