Glad to clear some of that fog, but you should never be embarrassed to ask questions. Ask away!

While I sort of enjoy my state of basic tech confusion, it is nice to have some illumination.
I always wondered what the letters stood for and was embarrassed to ask. I'm sure other members and consumers are the same!

I'd like to say yes, but I can't. Smaller and smaller formats keep coming out but there are still devices that use the older formats and it's a real mishmash. I would like to see people at least use standards, but as you can see even that is hit or miss. Some companies decide to create their own format.

Part of the problem is that different people want different things. I want practically unlimited memory and fast access to data. Others want small and sleek, and are willing to pay for it in MB and speed and dollars. Also, the lifetime of devices often spans several generations - not everyone buys a new PDA or a new camera every six months or even every two years.

A new laptop including a SmartMedia slot? Wow. I thought SmartMedia was pretty much a defunct format, still around in older devices but not really used in anything new.

Thanks for demystifying some of these storage formats.

Toshiba has started shipping notebook computers with Smartmedia slots built in. Which is great, except all our digital cameras use CF format.

Do you see the number of formats decreasing over time?
