The Bottom Line Back in the day, epinions.com was many times more fun than it is now simply because the members wanted to have fun rather than bicker over trivial matters
So, I was reminiscing the other day about how epinions.com used to be, and it almost brought tears to my eyes. I remember over winter break of my 99-00 school year when one of my friends from college sent me an email about this site. I joined immediately, and I wrote some opinions. Rates were much higher back then, so I started to make decent cash, so I wrote some more. Anyway, the hardest part of the whole epinions.com process for me was deciding what products I should write on. I never wrote that many opinions, and I certainly didn't make as much money as some other people on the site, but I did enjoy myself. Almost all of the opinions I wrote in the first few months I was on the site were humorous and fun. I think that most of them actually had some value, too. And, in the beginning, people would actually recommend my reviews because they thought that they were fun to read (For instance, check out my opinion on Temper Tantrums if you are interested). Now, if you don't write a structured essay that details every part of the product conceivable, you are lucky to get a "somewhat helpful" rating. No one has fun on this site anymore. Everyone is uptight and worried about what everyone else thinks. All I ever see is people bickering and arguing and trying to ruin other people's ratings. Seriously, what is wrong with some of you? Do you really think that what goes on on this site is that important that you should insult other members and rate their reviews "not helpful" just because of who they are? That is patently ridiculous. When this site was still young, it was multiple times superior to what it is now. This is not just because of the lower rates now either. The members have become petty and overly capitalistic, and frankly, the bourgeois attitude of some of the members disgusts me.  |
