Ziploc Tall Square Containers

Written: Sep 15 '05
Pros:Disposable, inexpensive,
Cons:For the price…none.
The Bottom Line: An inexpensive semi-disposable container I can’t live without.

These are the ideal left over containers. When I have leftovers I will generally put them in these containers and take them to work the next day. At about ¾ full it is the size of a good lunch.

How it works
These are plastic containers with lids. They are made out of a thin plastic. The lid is blue and the bottom unit is a clear plastic. Unlike Tupperware and other plastic containers these are designed to be semi-disposable. This means that you can use them multiple times but if they break or get really dirty then you will not feel bad about disposing of them..

What I use them for.
I mainly use them for food and snack storage. When I have leftover or other left over dinner foods then I will put it in this container and eat it for lunch the next day.
I also use this (and the large glad containers) to freeze giant ice cubes. I will use the cubes for my coolers and they last longer than ice because of the surface area/volume ratio, they are easier to use than ice cube trays, and they eliminate the need to buy ice at the store (if you have a large freezer.) If you want cubes then just break the large ice cube with a hammer or ice pick (just as long as you do not want perfectly shaped cubes, for that stick with a tray.) I also use the large Gladware for this purpose.
I also freeze chicken stock in these instead of using ice cube trays.

About the design change
They changed the design sometime around/before spring 05. I feel the new design is an improvement and feels more secure. But the different versions are not completely interchangeable. I forget if the new lid doesn’t work with the old container or vice-versa but if you are wondering why you were having trouble with your old ones then now you know why.

How secure is the lid
It is very secure. I have never had it leak or spill on me while transporting it to and from work. I have a good deal of confidence in these.

What I like
-Disposable
-Inexpensive
-Secure

What I do not like
Actually nothing I can think of for the price. Maybe an even more secure lid but that seems to be pushing it for a semi-disposable container.

Alternatives
I also use the Rubbermaid and Glad containers. Both are terrific alternatives but I feel the Rubbermaid have a more secure lid out of all three.

Cleaning
I have not had a problem cleaning them. I throw everything in the dishwasher to clean it. You also should not have any problems washing by hand. If you do have trouble cleaning them they just trash them.

Durability
These are disposable containers but with that in mind they are very durable. I am estimating that I get 15-20 uses out of one before it dies some horrible death (depending on how careful you are.) I will trash them if I get some serious type of growth or if the container gets cracked.
When I use them to make giant ice cubes I have to be careful when I take the ice out. The best way is to run them under warm water. I have been known to break these if I’m in a rush to get the ice out because I bang them a little too hard. And the freezing process will wear on the container making it a little round on the bottom.

Do they stack?
The sides are angled slightly so they can stack. Makes storage a lot easier.

Weight and capacity.
Weight: 1.5 ounces
Capacity: 4 cups and 1.5 ounces

Summary
There are great little container that I get a lot of use out of. I find them to be the ideal size for leftovers that I plan on taking to work the next day. In addition they make great big ice cubes that find their way into my ice chest. And if you damage one you won’t feel bad because these little guys are pretty cheap. They are also dishwasher friendly. So for disposable storage devices they work very well.
