| mom2daniel's Full Review: Charity Organizations |
You just found out you or someone you love has lung cancer, one of the top killers in the world. Where do you go for information? What can you do for yourself or the person you love? Take a trip on the web to http://www.alcase.org/, a wonderful charity organization dedicated to helping people and families stricken with all types of lung cancer.
ALCASE stands for Alliance for Lung Cancer Advocacy, Support and Education. They are a little known charity organization, and unlike the American Cancer Society which focuses on all types of cancer, ALCASE is the only organization out there that is solely dedicated to lung cancer.
If you visit their web site, you find information on how they provide education, advocacy and support. They are a non-profit organization, and they always acknowledge donations by sending a thank you card to the person who donated, and the family they donated it for. My father died in October and although he committed suicide, he did have end-stage lung cancer: instead of flowers or cards, I requested that people donate to ALCASE. I had so many thank you cards come in with my father's name.
ALCASE also has their own ribbon for supporting lung cancer. Unlike the pink ribbon for breast cancer, this one is clear with gold trim. They say this signifies the "invisible" population with lung cancer. I wear mine on my work identification badge, and get questions about it all the time...therefore I can spread the word about ALCASE in this way.
To raise money for their organization, ALCASE also offers a variety of merchandise that you can order on line or over their toll-free number. They offer t-shirts, which are wonderful quality cotton; the pins I mentioned, either embroidered or plastic; notecards; and a lung cancer manual. You can also sign up for membership in their alliance for $25 a year, and the funds go to lung cancer research. Membership includes a newsletter published four times a year.
If you have cancer of any kind, or know someone that does, information is the key to acceptance. Please get information from your doctor or the Internet, because they will help you learn, learn, learn. And don't forget to check out ALCASE.
