Compare Yourself with the State

Aug 09 '01

The Bottom Line Immagine yourself in the same scenario and then make the decision.

When you ask yourself whether you should search your child's room, think about how you would feel in the same scenario. We should use the State as an example. We all know that the State markets new surveillance laws to the public by saying they are "for your own good" or "for your protection" or "for the protection of others" or more often "for the protection of children". We already see surveillance cameras in public places. We have come to accept this. We know our communications lines are being monitored and surveyed. Unfortunately, we have come to accept this and the privacy we once had is shrinking consistently. However, the general consensus is that this invasion of privacy stops at the door to your home (save for communications... internet/fax/telephone).

We would be outraged to return to our homes only to find that someone had been inside without our authority. Looked through our possessions, read our diaries, looked through our internet usage history and so on. We would feel violated and would no longer trust that our government was looking after our "best interests". We would see them as the enemy to avoid and certainly not a friend who we could share our conerns with. We would try to avoid them at all costs. Keep them out of our lives and become more private. Perhaps we would use counter surveillance & extra security. We would feel this regardless of the reason stated for the search... regardless of whether they thought it was for our protection.

Do you want to be seen in this light by your child?
