I am a fanatic when it comes to researching things and online photo sharing websites is no exception. I've used numerous free sites in the past including Dotphoto, Ofoto (now owned by Kodak) and Webshots. I was in search of a photo site without ads and pushes for you to print and purchase items. Also, many of these free sites have clauses in their terms which gives them the right to delete your photos after one year if you don't make any purchases. As I researched, I narrowed down to two, Flickr (now owned by Yahoo) and Smugmug. I used Flickr first mainly because I had heard more about it than Smugmug. They are both great sites for different reasons but I chose Smugmug because I was more interested in have nicely organized albums than sharing photos in a blog type environment.
Signing Up:
Signing up was quite easy and although you give a credit card number it is not charged until the 7 day trial period is completed. There is no free account but the standard account is more than adequate for most folks. The annual cost is $29.95 and you will not miss any of the free services. This is much better and more pleasing to the eye as well. If you use the coupon code OxLHTJXjf6w9U at signup you will get a $5.00 discount bringing your cost down to $24.95.
Editing and organizing your pictures and albums is nearly flawless and quite easy even for beginners. In my book, the organization feature is more important here as you can use numerous programs widely available to edit pictures before you upload.
Uploading can be done using numerous methods but I highly recommend the new beta uploader which has worked great for me and there is no upload limit for this method. Also you can have an unlimitted number of photos stored on Smugmug. The only limit is each photo has to be less than 8GB (that's a huge, huge photo) and you have a limit on monthly bandwidth which is also huge so shouldn't be a concern for most people.
Overall I would highly recommend this site if you want organized photo galleries and would also like to share and get advice on your photos from professionals via Smugmug forums. Your albums can also be private so you can just share with friends and family. With a 7 day trial, give it a try and like me, I think you will agree there are not too many sites that can compete. Yes Flickr is a cool site but it's a whole different animal.
Again if you decide to try it, use the code below to save yourself $5.00 (OxLHTJXjf6w9U)
