I purchased a 2004 Sebring Convertible about a month ago (its now September of 2005). Let me share with you various pros and cons concerning this automobile.
Pros: Style. The car is gorgeous. Period. Both exterior and interior styling are certainly guaranteed to turn some heads, but most importantly, its how the owner feels about the car. At this price range (side note: Im a firm believer in purchasing used vehicles a year or two old as the depreciation with just about any vehicle is monstrous so I think its wiser to buy something pre-owned and save thousands), one can little afford to get more for their money.
Style: Again. This car is far more about appearance than substance. Notice the delightful front panel / dashboard layout. The attention to detail is obvious in the instrument cluster (which is top notch), and continues to the stereo/A/C cluster UNTIL one actually feels the knobs/controls. If one actually does this, theyd invariably become aware that Chrysler imported the plastic knobs from Malaysia for approximately 30 cents each. Seriously. Ive owned Micronauts which had more substance than the dondalies which adorn the dashboard.
Cons: Power. Actually, lack thereof. This car will NOT win any races, which is just fine with me since I never find myself in the position of actually racing it. Okay. Forget races. How about merely trying to accelerate to the car-pool lane? Not going to do it. Well, at least, not in any way, shape or form which would constitute something approximating reasonable speed and power.
Convertible Top: It works. So far, always, and reliably. However, Im quite concerned that the top would suddenly malfunction as is evidenced by the coughing, wheezing sound the contraption makes when I press the little switch to move it.
The drivers side and passengers side windows often stutter and whine and when theyre up (with the top up), theres a horrific creaking.
Convertible Top Cover/Boot: Pain in the rear to install, and I highly recommend that at least two people are involved in the process of installation. If ONE person tries to do it, theyll scratch the heck out of the black plastic shroud at the rear of the vehicle. Side note (yet again): if you purchase this vehicle used, you will more than likely not have the boot, which means that if your want it youll have to purchase it from Chrysler. It will cost you over $400, will not look nearly aesthetically pleasing as youd imagine, and youll find yourself not using it all that much at all anyway. Save yourself the heartache and buy a decent stereo, a pony or even a life-time supply of Rice-a-Roni. It would be a far wiser investment.
My take? Honestly, I love the car. I really do. However, Ive always been of the mindset that style trumps substance in almost every case.
I can live with the irrationality of my position and if you can too, buy a 2004 Chrysler Sebring. Youll look great driving it with the top down, and few people would ever notice that you could do far better power-wise by driving Fred Flinstones piece of junk as your enormous feet *twinkity-twinkity-dink* on the asphalt.
