The Bottom Line Fellow epinioners, join me in my quest to ease the financial burden of our friend with cancer.

Ok, listen up everyone. If you don't know Hard_To_Please, I don't expect you to care about this, or to act on what I am proposing. But if you do know him, whether that be having him on your WOT or just remember seeing his name somewhere, you should know, if you do not already, that he has been diagnosed with cancer. The epinions he has written to date detailing this can be found here:

He is receiving an incredible amount of support. People are leaving him sincere and heart-felt comments, giving him their personal phone numbers, praying for him, etc. But I propose that we do even more for him.

The cost of treating cancer is high at best, but with so many friends on epinions (741 who trust him at present), it would only take $10 or $20 from each of us to take care of much, if not all, of the bills he will incur because of this.

Mark (Hard_To_Please), if you would accept my (hopefully our) offer, please give us some way to send you whatever we feel we can donate to help you. I understand that giving out your personal home address might not be the wisest thing, but perhaps you could set up a P.O. box that we could send checks or whatever to. It's up to you, as is whether or not you accept this in the first place.

There's not much else to say. Our friend (to many of you) is in dire need of assistance, and while encouragement and prayers will certainly help, they don't directly pay hospital bills. If Mark accepts, I urge all those who have ever enjoyed a Hard_To_Please review to give whatever you can to help him. We'd be helping more than a personality on epinions. We'd be helping a man who most of us, if not all, would call "friend" in real life.

Best of luck, Mark. We're behind you all the way.

Update (8/13/01)

He has agreed to accept our offer! He has set up a PayPal account, and a P.O. box. PayPal is free, quick, and easy to sign up for; plus, he gets some form of interest on his account, so we'll be giving him even more over time. If you want to aid Mark in that way, you can donate to dude4u@netzero.net from PayPal. If you would prefer to send him a check or money order or whatever, you can send them to:

Serious Business
Attn: Mark
P.O. Box 852
O'Fallon, MO 63366

This can also be used to send him cards or whatever. He needs as much emotional support as we can give -- but I'm sure that will be a lot, so don't take it personally if you don't hear back from him, as I imagine he'll be swamped once this fund-raiser is in full force.

That brings me to another point. If you plan on financially supporting Mark, please put something about this fund-raiser on your profile page. The more people who find out about this, the better. You can take a look at my profile page if you wish, to see how I set up information about this.

That's all for now. I will most likely add updates as time goes on (how much money Mark has received, how he is doing, etc. etc., based on what he wishes to share), but I imagine they will be erratic.

Thanks again everyone. Keep Mark in your thoughts and prayers.

Update -- sort of (8/16/01)

At the request of Mark, from an email, I have posted the comment he left for this "opinion" in the main body of it. I'd rather not, but I also don't want to turn him down. So here it is:

Commenting Through Tears
by Hard_To_Please
Mark-

I made it through this entire day without crying once-- until I came here and read of your plan and the comments of those before me!

I sure don't understand why you call yourself FallenJesusBoy when you seem like an angel to me right now.

My initial instinct was to politefully decline. While I always donate to charities or to help people that have fallen on hard times, I find it difficult to be on the receiving end. Stupid pride, I guess.

However, I really began to worry today about money. While my medical insurance seems to be pretty good up to this point, my concern is how to pay my other bills. My disability plan at work will pay my full salary for four months, but only 50% after that time. I learned today that I may not be able to return to work for up to a year. I have no idea how I will live for eight months on half the salary I am accustomed to.

That is why I am going to accept your generous, heartfelt offer. (And the fact that jkk can get pretty ugly when I don't do what he says!)

I am not familiar with PayPal, but will investigate and then give you the info.

I am overwhelmed with the hundreds of emails and comments and have faith in humankind like never before in my life! God Bless You!...Mark

*******

... yup, so, there you have it.

Update (10/12/01)

I learned just this morning of Mark's passing... I guess I've said all that I want to on my profile page, so you can read that if you'd like to.

Thanks, everyone. Our efforts were not in vain, even though Mark is no longer with us. I know that each and every comment, email, card, letter, prayer, and donation lifted his spirits, and helped him deal with what he faced, because he knew he was not alone. God bless you all.
