Very disappointing and confusing experience

Although the price of the item that I purchased was good, I still haven't received it, so I can't say much about the delivery. One day after I made my order, I received an e-mail thanking me for my order and stating that my order would be shipped that same day. Five days went by, and I did not receive anything, so I e-mailed customer service, and received a reply that said that my item was on back order, and it would be a couple of weeks before it would be in stock.
I should never have received the e-mail on 9/15 telling me that my order was being shipped on 9/15 if it wasn't even in stock. Then, after they discovered it wasn't in stock, I should have been notified immediately. If I hadn't inquired on my own, they never would have bothered to tell me that they couldn't deliver as promised. Since this was a birthday gift, I needed to know right away if they couldn't come up with the item so that I could make alternate plans.
They need to have better communication with their customers, and when they can't follow through, they should offer some kind of compensation.
