Cool Gifts for College Kids

The Bottom Line Aside from clothes, food, and money, what types of items will your college-bound folks need?

So, there's a precocious young adult in the family who is about to head off for college and you are at ends as to what to give them to make their future home away from home a pleasant place. Here are a few gift ideas for college bound kids:

– gift certificates: everyone loves these. Certificates for stores like Office Max, Staples, Linens 'n' Things, music stores, or Hold Your Own (wall-to-wall boxes, crates, picture frames, etc.) will help your college-bound find what they need for the dorm room and for classes.

– bath caddy with supplies: last year, a family friend gave me a great gift - a plastic bath caddy with supplies like a loofa sponge, hand soap, lotion, Kleenex, toothpaste, shower gel, and more. It covered my toiletry needs for about a month, and the caddy was a lifesaver in carrying my stuff to the bathroom down the hall.

– computer supplies: if you know what brand of computer/printer your student has, then consider giving them stuff to keep them working. Big packs of printer paper or inkjet refills are a nice thought, as are packs of floppy disks or CD-Rs.

– phone cards: most university long distance is expensive, but 10 or 20 minute phone cards can help to alleviate some of the cost. These also make great care package items.

– batteries: just about everyone needs batteries, but most of us don't realize it until our remote control or flashlight goes dead. Double A (for Walkmen), triple A (for remote controls and calculators) and C and D cell (for big flashlights) can be obtained in jumbo packs at places like Sam's Club and Costco. It's best to be prepared, after all.

– favorite books: if you had a book that you fell in love with during your college years and think that your college-bound would like it, then consider giving them a copy. Inspirational (ex. Chicken Soup for the Soul), reference, and cook books also work well. There are some cook books made with college students in mind!

– photo albums or picture frames: so that they won't forget home, try making a photo album of friends and family. Framed pictures of family groups or of high school graduation are also thoughtful gifts.

Whatever you give them, make sure that your gift is both useful and sentimental. The easier you can make their transition into college life, the happier your students will be!
