The Bottom Line Bird Bread is simple to make and a wonderful addition to your birds diet!
Is your bird a picky eater? Does he insist on picking out his favorite seeds from seed mixtures and ignore the fresh fruit and vegetables you offer? It is becoming quite well known that birds do not thrive on seeds alone. Avian experts recommend supplementing your birds seed diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. When i brought my two parakeets (Fred and Charlie) home and started reading up on parakeet feeding I thought that it would be easy to entice them with fresh food. I soon found out that even baby parakeets are not easily swayed by the green and orange stuff and insisted on making seeds their daily food. The only fresh food they would touch was fresh corn on the cob. I still worried that they were lacking in vitamins. I then tried the pellet type food that is out on the market. This is a formed pellet that is supposed to be a healthy and complete diet for birds. That may be but only if you can get them to eat it! I had very little luck in this area and didn't want to starve the little guys so in the end we were back to the seeds. A friend who has a parrot suggested that i make my birds some bread! Bird bread is simple to make. Start with a package of Corn bread mix. This is available at any grocery store and comes in several brands. Follow the directions except add 2 eggs instead of one and add the crushed up eggshell along with the egg. Also use 1/2 Cup milk. Now comes the best part. To this mix you can add many healthy ingredients. Experiment with some of these: Smashed up banana Grated apple Grated carrot Fresh corn kernels chopped peas Use your imagination and mix it all up. Add a Cup or so of un-hulled bird seeds to the mixture and fill muffin cups half full. Bake according to the package. My birds love this stuff. I store the cooled muffins wrapped and frozen in the freezer. Then I pull them out as needed. The birds love to pull the pieces apart and spread the crumbs everywhere. It tends to make a bit of a mess but it is so healthy for the birds and they really enjoy it. When they see the Bird Bread coming they get all excited and flap their little wings. So give your picky eater a super treat. Great for him and he will love you for it! |
