Capture the Power of the "Sun & Earth" to Clean Your Home
Written: Apr 27 '01
Pros:Natural, great smell, earth friendly, non-toxic, biodegradable...
Cons:None at all!
The Bottom Line: Sun & Earth cleaners are the only ones that I can 100% recommend for cost, effectiveness, non-toxicity and safeness.
“Safe Products That Clean Better. Naturally.” It was this motto of the Sun & Earth line of cleaning products manufactured by McWolf Enterprises, Inc. of Norristown, PA that first caught my eye in the grocery store. Sun & Earth brand promised me a 100% natural line of cleaning products that were safe to use around children and pets, so I just had to try them. Now, I can hardly imagine using anything else!
Do You Care About Your Family, Yourself and Your Pets?
It always amazes me when I see people who have bottle after bottle of household cleaner stowed under the sink or in a closet. I mean, how many different things do you need to clean your house or apartment? It gets even worse when I pull out a bottle or two and read the ingredients and cautions. The ingredient list is usually long and full of chemicals the average person has never heard of. Then the cautions scream out things such as: “May Cause Blindness!” or “Found to Cause Cancer in Lab Animals!” or even “Avoid Contact With Skin!” There are usually a whole host of side effects and symptoms as well including dizziness, choking, irritation, vomiting, etc. Do these things sound like fun to you? I didn’t think so!
Since I do not believe a product has to be dangerous and/or potentially life threatening to clean well, I am always looking for natural or organic products to use in my home that actually work. Many “cleaning” products just smell nice but do not clean while others clean but leave behind toxic chemicals. Sun & Earth gives consumers the best of both worlds by offering a product line that not only smells great but works extremely well.
The Deal With Sun & Earth—The Claims and Buying Info
The company mission is to “provide consumers with safe, non-toxic cleaning solutions that work as well as or better than leading "toxic" brands and offer them at a competitive price.” McWolf Enterprises also states that Sun & Earth products are ‘safe to use around children and pets and won't harm the environment because they are made from 100% natural ingredients.’ They claim that their products will ‘provide great relief for people suffering from allergies and sensitive skin.’
The Sun & Earth product line features four cleaning products that can be bought in many traditional grocery stores (Acme, Genuardis, etc), via phone at 1-800-298-7861, and online at www.sunandearth.com. These products are also available at select natural food stores, but the company truly seems to be targeting the average consumer who shows at a large chain store.
The following is a look at each of the four Sun & Earth products. Some of the information is consistent among them.
All Purpose Cleaner
This cleaner comes in a 22 oz. spray bottle and can be compared to traditional cleaners such as Fantastik. The Sun & Earth cleaner is biodegradable and made from water, coconut oil and orange oil. The product is not tested on animals and the bottle is made from recycled plastic. The company suggests using this cleaner on: countertops, microwaves, bathrooms, pet areas, laundry pre-soak, greasy stovetops, refrigerators, school desks and toys, carpet stain remover, outdoor furniture, sponge mopping floors and even as a glass cleaner. I have tried all of these and Sun & Earth works beautifully! The product has a great citrus scent which is much more pleasant that an overpowering chemical stink. The only caution you will find on this bottle is that while the product is safe to use around pets and children, you should not drink it or spray it in your eyes. (I’m paraphrasing here, but you get the picture!) The all purpose cleaner also comes with the “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” and usually costs me about $1.99 to $2.99 per bottle.
Pros: Everything listed above. I love this product as it smells great, cleans great and is inexpensive!
Cons: I wish you could buy refill bottles and reuse the original spray bottle.
Ultra Laundry Detergent
This hypoallergenic detergent does not contain any dyes, perfumes or preservatives. This is great for people like me who have had allergic reactions to many of the best selling detergents like Tide or All. The detergent also comes in a recycled plastic bottle, is not tested on animals and is biodegradable. That fresh citrus scent is present here again, but don’t worry, your clothes won’t come out of the wash smelling like oranges—just fresh and clean! The 50 oz. bottle sells for about $3.99, which is highly competitive with all of the major brands of laundry detergent. The detergent itself is clear and I much prefer that to the toxic electric blue of most traditional detergents. Like the all purpose cleaner, the ultra laundry detergent comes with the “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.”
Pros:I haven’t had any allergic reactions since I started using this detergent.
Cons: I wish it came in a larger size because I use it up too quickly.
Hypoallergenic Liquid Soap
The soap has no dyes, perfumes or preservatives and comes in an 8 oz. pump style bottle. Again, this product is not tested on animals, is biodegradable and comes in a recycled bottle. The liquid soap contains aloe vera that is absolutely wonderful at keeping your hands soft and smooth. Because of this ingredient, the citrus scent is not as obvious as the other products. This mild soap always rinses clean from your hands and it doesn’t leave a residue like many liquid soaps do. The liquid soap generally costs me less than $2.00, but I have often received it free with the purchase of the detergent.
Pros: My hands always feel clean after washing with this liquid soap.
Cons: I also wish this came in a 16 oz. or larger refill bottle.
Dish Liquid
For those of us who do not have dishwashers, hand washing dishes can be a major chore. I hate dish liquids that leave my hands either dried out and cracked or covered in slimy scum. The Sun & Earth dish liquid always leaves my hands clean and soft. Like the all purpose cleaner, the dish liquid is made with water, coconut oil and orange oil so it has the deep citrus scent. It is ultra concentrated so just a little bit of the 17.7 oz. recycled bottle goes a long way. Perhaps my favorite aspect of the dish liquid is that is rinses away quickly. I can’t stand wasting 5 minutes and a lot of hot water trying to get all the soap off of my dishes and Sun & Earth dish liquid solves this problem for me. The dish liquid also comes in a smaller size and both can be had for $1.00 to $3.00.
Pros: No more ‘dish pan hands.’
Cons: None.
You Won’t be Able to Live Without Them!
I have a good feeling that once you try any or all of the Sun & Earth products you won’t need to use much else to clean your house. What could be better than cleaning products that are safe for people, pets and the environment? Simply the fact that these items actually clean extremely well and have competitive prices! Give Sun & Earth a chance and order the company’s sampler pack online. You will get one of each product for $14.99 and that includes tax and shipping and handling. You’ve got nothing to lose by trying Sun & Earth products except harsh, toxic chemicals that are hazardous to your health—can you afford not to try these?
