Automatic? So much Easy!

Aug 13 '01

The Bottom Line The title says it all, it is just easier!

First things first, I know my title should have the word easier, instead of easy, but that demonstrates how easy a decision it is to choose an automatic car over a manual one.

And since we were talking about easiness, let's discuss the simplicity of the automatic transmission. You put your foot on the brake, and either park the car, or put it in drive or reverse. That's it. No constantly switching gears, no third peddle on the floor )for those of us--like myself--with big feet) to further confuse you and crowd your feet.

For those of us in urban areas, or places with less than tropical climates, automatic transmission cars are the wiser choice. For us Wisconsinites, it's all we can do to regulate our speed, look for ice, and keep on the lookout for the one moron who has to exceed the speed limit despite the black ice patches and blizzard-like snowfall.

And if you live in a major metropolitan area, automatic is the way to go. Who wants to spend their morning shifting back and forth from first to second in rush hour traffic? If the jerking doesn't give you motion sickness, the sheer repetitiveness will drive you insane.

So we've already deemed that it's easier. What else? While those of you will snicker and tout the superior fuel economy of manual transmissions, recent advances in the auto industry have narrowed the gap noticeably, making it a moot point.

Finally, value. While manual transmissions are cheaper initially, the clutch is considered a wearable part and often will need replacement at least once during the life of the car. Also, depreciation is accelerated.

However, the choice is yours!
