Well, it may be an easy choice for the simple-minded... (Reply to this comment)

...but, for those of us who actually know how to work the fabled manny tranny, making the choice between auto and manual involves more than asking ourselves, "Which is easier, more convenient and allows us to carry out our God-given role as lazy couch-in-a-cage operators?"
Unfortunately for you, the only thing that might save you in bad weather is the lack of power transmitted to the wheels while, with a manual, one can actually choose which gear s/he is in to maintain control over the car.
To say that driving manual takes one's attention away from the dangers one faces on the road exposes your and many other manual detractors' misconceptions about driving. Driving needn't be about reacting to the hazards we run into but, rather, it needs to be all about looking ahead and planning ahead so you actually see the hazards ahead and prepare for them well before you reach them. So, it's a darn good thing that driving manual makes you focus on the road ahead. Driving's what you should be doing while behind the wheel anyway, rather than putting on make-up, holding a cellphone up to your ear (they DO sell hands-free kits for that and, here in NYS, hands-free is the law) and watching Desperate Housewives on your DVD player. If you're gonna be doing that, pull off the road and do it but don't be putting other drivers and pedestrians in harm's way. Lastly, if it's raining out or otherwise sight is limited, for heaven's sake, put your headlights on. Here in NY, it's the law, though you wouldn't know it from all of the ignorant drivers who seem to have a problem with turning on their headlights during the day...

Not to mention coffee (Reply to this comment)

Who can drink their morning coffee with a manual shift? People talk about the dangers of using cell phones, try shifting and steering with a 16 oz mocha brimming over the top.
