Web Sites for All Gamers

Aug 14 '01

The Bottom Line Gamerankings.com and IGN.com.. Two sites every gamer should bookmark!!

I love to read reviews on games. I never buy or even rent a game unless I know something about it or if it's a probable winner. Too many times I have impulsively rented or bought crummy games because it may have looked or sounded cool based on the cover or pictures. Well I have found two great sites everyone should know about so they have a good idea on what they're taking home too play. Of course Epinions is king for all purchases, including games, but these two sites provide a very thorough analysis and review of games on all consoles, including the PC.

Gamerankings.com
There are several top notch web sites that review and preview upcoming games. Game Pro, Daily Radar, Gamer's Web, Gamecenter, Game Critics, Console Haven and the list goes on and on. Unfortunately, even though each of these sites have great critics, each site has their own standards and biases, so you may not find a game with an accurate overall rating. I came across Gamerankings.com one day and finally found a site that provides an average rating based on several of these other web sites. The rating or percentage you are getting is much more accurate across all gaming lines. When a game is reviewed by a web site, Gamerankings accumulates the web site scores and provides you with the average of all sites that have reviewed a certain game. Under each game the site is listed with a score for the game. You can even hyperlink to the site and read their review. The more popular the game the better chance for an accurate rating because chances are more sites have reviewed the game. The ratings include released titles as well as previewed titles yet to hit the shelves. And all the top consoles and PC games are available to review; PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, Gameboy, Gamecube, Gameboy Advance and even the upcoming XBox. The site also allows you to search games under different categories so you can size up similar games to make a better choice. For example, first you choose the platform or all platforms, then filter your category choices. You tell the site what kind of game, when it was released, the minimum amount of votes it received and how many games you want listed. So you could look for a first person shooter game, released within the last 6 months and see what the top rated games are. It's really nice. Besides these great features it also includes most of the other things you would find on other common gaming sites. News, surfer votes, release dates, cheats, screen shots and purchasing links. It's all here for you.

IGN.COM
This site I may spend hours on because it gives you a lot too look at before you buy a game. Call me a nerd but when I go to a software store I spend a lot of time looking at the trailer videos of new games that are usually displayed in the windows or inside the store. It really gives me a good idea of what this game is going to look like when I play it at home. Well, this site provides a ton of multimedia for you to check out. And like gamerankings, it doesn't discriminate on console. All your favorite platforms are there. I recently spent some time checking out some of the games coming up for the XBox. I was able to see some videos for many of them and will probably make an XBox purchase because of it. After you find a game you want to check out, below the written review the site provides some great multimedia for you to glaze your eyes upon. Some games may have more to offer than others depending upon what IGN was able to get their hands on. For example, I was able to see some great video footage on Splashdown, PS2's latest jet ski game. The video shows the jet ski jumping over waves and and performing different stunts. I was amazed at how smooth the graphics were not too mention how real the water looked. Of course, multimedia doesn't tell you much on gameplay but when you combine the written review with some excellent screenshots and movies you have some sense on whether this game is or isn't for you. By the way if you go to this site check out the images of BLOOD WAKE, a speed boat version of twisted metal!!

I hope I have provided some informative info here. Again, these are two of my favorite sites on the web. I spend almost as much time reviewing on these sites as I do playing. Check them out.....AND please let me know if their are better ones!! (These are just the one's I've come across)
