I can state that a hub is not necessarily required for an Ethernet (coax) network. Furthermore, in such a network, the main cable can only be tapped at points at regular intervals (I don't remember the exact spacing -- I think it's about 3 feet) with a short cable leading into the computer.

With twisted pair cables, you do need a hub with more than 2 computers.
