The Bottom Line: Just leave it on the store shelf, the cats don't like the instability and will return to your sofa for sharpening and stretching routines.

I originally bought this scratching post for my two cats who seemed to believe that my sofa was the perfect scratching post.

Because my two cats had become accustomed to using my sofa as a scratching post I knew that a transition to a true to life post wouldn't be easy, so I set myself up for the challenge.

I pulled the post out of the box and set it right next to the sofa they so dearly loved. I was sure the rope of the post would attract them like a cat to a mouse. I was wrong.
They still insisted on using the sofa, so now I had to become an active participant in getting them to use the post.

Whenever I saw them using the sofa instead of the post I would calmly move them to the post. It was at this point that they looked at me like I was a loon and walked away. But I stuck to my guns and kept up with this routine for more than a month.

At one point I did, finally, get one of my cats to use the post, but the post tended to tip over and thus sent the cat back to the sofa.

So at this point, my child find this product fairly useful as a step stool. And the cats never use it, there just isn't the stability that they need to sharpen their claws and stretch that they need.
