Thanks for your comments. If you read closely, I wrote that I wasn't transferring since I was happy with my school. My experiences with transferring are friends who want to transfer or have transferred schools.
I would say it's going to be tough for a transer student, maybe even more so than being a freshman at a school. Because you're arriving after everyone's already settled and you still have to meet people and make a routine that's comfortable. I think the adjustment period is tough and might be a huge factor in why people don't transfer. So if you find yourself in this situation, don't hole up in the dark of night. Get involved in activities, introduce yourself at classes. Meeting people is a great way to get over that adjustment hump.
As far as beginning the transferring process, it's much like the application process. First you have to find out if the intended schools accept transfer students. If so, obtain an application. The application should include a section for transfer students. You have to fill out your information, write an essay, short answers, send your scores as well as a transcript from high school and college. You'll also need teacher/professor recommendations. I would highly suggest talking this over with your advisor as she/he knows how to deal with this and can give you great advice.
Other advice I can give is that you strongly research the schools that you are applying to transfer to. Make notes of what your own school lacks and what you want out of a school and then do some research.
Sorry for rambling, hope this helps.

Good review, but... (Reply to this comment)

This review was well written, but you never really told me anything about transferring other than to do it if I don't like my school.
What are your experiences with transfers? Is it tough to fit into a new school? How exactly does one go about it? Any other advice for the transfer student?

one more thing (Reply to this comment)

I would also add that I think many people who transfer do so not so much based on the school they attend, but college in general. Many people that find reasons to dislike one school may dislike another school for the same or completely different reasons. For example, I disliked my first year in college but stayed with the same one. I am happy that I did. One of my main gripes with the college I attended was the people that went there ... but in hindsight, those people were just college students and would have been the same no matter where I went to school. So that's my two cents. Good epinion!

would just add one more thing. Transferring is not exactly like applying to a new college. Most colleges have an orientation or introduction thing at the beginning, for the freshmen. This creates a sense of community in the class, and offers the initial socialization possibilities. Transfer students, however, do not go through that, and thus have a harder time to adapt to a new place. I'm talking from my own experience in this.
Otherwise, thanks for offering the view of the person who is staying; that's the less usual point of view :)
