The Bottom Line As long as you make them enjoyable to do, the kids will thank you later in life.
The Best Chores for Kids. When I was a child I thought there was no such thing. My parents were extremely strict. This was in the 50's and 60's, when a parent said "jump" we never thought of saying "how high". Both my brother and I had numerous chores. From helping to clean the house, bringing in the milk from the front doorstep, to going to the shop. I do realize that times have changed, and smaller children may not be safe to go to the store, or even do weeding in the front garden. However, I really believe that with adult guidance children can actually benefit from giving a helping hand. With my own daughter it was a pleasure for her to help me. Normally I would plan chores so that we could do them together, or that I would be close to hand. She was always willing to try most things so I varied her tasks from day to day. This way she was able to grow up learning how to run a home. From early years she would do dusting, sweeping etc. Then as she started to grow, she helped with the washing and cooking. This was always supervised until she became a sensible teenager. As I was a working mother I began to rely on her to come home from school and do whatever was necessary. By the time she became 16 and left school. Yes, in England 16 in the age many children start their working life, she would cook dinner if I was working late. She continued further education, at college, until reaching 18 years old. Right the way through her life she got 'pocket money' as we call it. First of all it was just pennies for candy. As she grew and was eager to help, this in turn became pounds sterling. Here in the good old USA. Life is different and times have certainly changed. I am really surprised how many ladies are unable to cook. I really think that the way I was brought up, and the same with my own daughter, really gave us a wonderful start in life. I would like to see more Mother's working with their children on skills (not chores) in the home. Praising them and giving them monetary incentives, to be an integral part of family life. So what are The Best Chores for Kids, depending on age, exactly the chores you do in the house. Give them the education that they need for the rest of their lives. Thank you for taking the time to read my ideas. ~Susan~ |
