| djsplendid's Full Review: Microsoft MSN Messenger Service |
I just out and out hate AOL. I got sick of the service, sick of the people so I got rid of it. However I kept AIM so I could keep in touch with people that way. Well AIM for some reason, just never liked to work. So I went out and got MSN messenger service. MSN for the time being, will suffice, it hardly gets used, I'm not much of a "chatter" when I'm online, I do use it to keep in touch with mom (she's 1600 miles away) and a few friends from AOL I talked into getting MSN instead.
Some features of MSN
One thing I like about it, its autolinked to MSN or hotmail e-mail. So when you sign on, if you have new mail you are prompted and a simple click will take you right to your mail. Another feature that I like, similar to ICQ, when people add you to their buddylist it asks you if you want to be on their list before they actually have you put on there. This way if there are people who harrass or annoy you, you can simply choose no and that person cannot add you to his/her list.
My main love for this is that you can have more then 1 person in a single IM box. Up to 20 in fact, so you can have your own little "chatroom" all conveniently placed in a small IM box. You can also connect to voice and speak to the party/parties instead of having to type. I can't tell you how much money in long distance I have saved using this feature.
It also tells you when the people you are communicating with are typing, so you know their not just sitting there staring blankly at a screen. You can page peoples mobile phones with MSN, play directplay capable games with others through MSN, share files and even use all those AOL emoticons (though MSN's are better) And if you like, you can even change the way your name is displayed to others at any time!
It just a great service, similar to AOL but NOT AOL.
The software is free, it runs 99 % of the time and when updates are available you are notified and prompted to d/l and install the updates. (Followed by the usual MS required re-boot)
