The Bottom Line Good luck...
In the book, Ecclesiastes, it says, “For in much wisdom is much grief, and increase of knowledge is increase of sorrow.” Based on my observation, experience and reading, I agree with this statement. I will prove my side of the quote using the book of Genesis, my Mom’s experience with cancer, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, my Grandfather’s aging, and my bout with AP Classes. These five topics will show why a growth of wisdom is an increase of woe. The story of importance in Genesis is of Adam and Eve living a life of blissful ignorance in the paradise of Eden. Given the chance to achieve the knowledge level of G-d, they eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. To keep them from seeking immortality by eating of the tree of life, G-d banished Adam and Eve out of the garden, and cursed them. In this case, Adam and Eve’s pursuit of knowledge led to their sadness. Because they gave into their impulse reactions to gain wisdom, they were given a curse that will stand for eternity. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story has a party to which Romeo and his friends go. There, Romeo sees Juliet for the first time and they immediately fall in love with each other. Before Romeo goes home that night, he finds out that Juliet is a Capulet, a feuding family of Romeo Montague’s. He and his “only love sprung from [his] only hate,” don’t this stop their love for each other. Even through this great sorrow, they manage to run off to get married. In the end, the sadness that accompanied the long standing feud between the two families causes the two “star-crossed lovers” to commit suicide. Here the knowledge of irreconcilable differences caused grief and eventually death from this sorrow. Before March of this year, my Mother had pretty good health. She had just lost 80 pounds and was feeling great. The last thing on her mind was any health problems. Then one day she found a lump on her breast. She went to the doctor and they did tests and found out that the tumor was cancerous and during the surgery found out that it hadn’t spread. This started a whole summer of Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy to neutralize the threat of the cancer spreading to other places in her body. This was obviously a very depressing time for my Mom and my family. In this case, the knowledge of one’s mortality leads to great sadness. I learned from this ordeal that nobody should take life for granted because anything can happen anytime. As people grow and mature, they inherently learn things about life and living. We start learning from the day we are born until the day we die. The more we live the more we learn, so as people get closer to the end of their lives, they have gained a lifetime full of wisdom to share with those around them. The negative aspect of getting older though is that as people age, they sometimes lose the ability to access their databases of knowledge as readily. My grandfather and I have always been able to just talk about all different things like, sports and his college days. The last time I was back in Des Moines to see my grandparents there, he seemed to not be able to remember as much about the past as he usually did. The compilation of wisdom over the course of a lifetime ends up in sorrow when the knowledge is lost through the process of dying. |
