matching revs of the engine to the clutch is the reason this works. You kind of said this in a round about way. It is a little easier to teach on a motorcycle first!

My Ranger's 5 speed slips out of gear very easily. The first time I had it come out of 5th by accident and thought I was going to strip the gears, but nothing happened. I thought something was wrong with the truck. Since then I've learned you can do this pretty easily with most cars.
