The Bottom Line College is a life learning experience that will help you in the "real" world because you will gain a better understanding of yourself.

Before most people step onto a college for the very first time they have a concept of what it will be like. Or so they think. Unfortunately, for me, and many others I am sure... that vision of college life is a lot simpler than college reality.

College reality teaches students many things about themselves, other people, and the "real" world they are surrounded by. I would like to share with you a few things I have learned about myself through my college experience so far. Currently a junior here's a few things I have learned from being exposed to the reality of college.

Patience

This is probably the number one thing I have learned since being in college. Before I started college I had an educational plan already set. I had flipped from front to back of the course catalogs and had on paper what class I would attend each semester. Today as a junior while also working full-time I can look at the paper and realize how behind schedule I am on my educational plan. Why? Because something happened along the way once I graduated from high school. It's called LIFE. Life has its way of prolonging things by ways of work, family, and unexpected events. Although at times I may get discouraged because I think how much further ahead I could be, I remind myself that a better way to look at it is that I am still enrolled. I must have patience.

Priorities

Oh, I had no clue. Faced with college life I thought it would be really simple to manage the books and a fun social life. That was in the beginning. And very untrue. I found myself postponing studying and projects/reports until the next day or week so that I could have fun socially. Too many parties and liquor, and not enough of hitting the books caused my grades to drop. This happens to many, many students. Some students will quit college because of this, others will get a grip on themselves. I now know I must stick to my daily schedule and I try to do school work in advance. This way if any social occasion unexpectedly comes up I am able to go. My number one priority IS school so if I can't attend that big party...oh well.

Determination

Determination pays off. Sometimes many students feel as though they will never finish school. I know I do! However I know that in the end when all is done, and I receive my degree I will be the happiest person ever!! Can't wait. Looking ahead at what is awaiting/available when completing college allows me to motivate myself. Thinking about the enjoyment from a career is can have, salary I can make, and the benefits it will bring to my family and I, make me more determined to put forth my best towards my academic career.

Over All I Have Learned...

If you really want to do something, you can achieve it. The tough times in college will only make you stronger if you do not quit. For those of you soon to be in college or currently attending, stick to it...It WILL payoff.
