College is a life learning experience that will help you in the "real" world because you will gain a better understanding of yourself.

Where's the Party? (Reply to this comment)
by viper1963
That's why I went to college! Seriously, I thought college was going to be one HUGE party.

Then reality set in and I had to buckle down and study. If I didn't, then I would have shamed my family.

My freshman year was all partying then the following year I became very serious in my studies because I saw so many people withdraw from college because they couldn't make the grade.

Yes, you can party BUT set limits.

Why I Found Your Review VH (Reply to this comment)
by LEDOMAINE
While financial considerations, selecting a school, making application and arranging testing, choosing a degree plan, and housing/food preparation are all important to the individual contemplating entering the hallowed halls of academe, they are strictly speaking the mechanics of the process. Without the wisdom as evinced by the learned words in your review, the machinations of college are undermined by self: lack of dedication, direction and control. Your review contained each of those invaluable nuts and bolts for true higher learning preparedness.

Also, though I would hardly say you'll be the happiest grad when your time comes (I think I could have rivaled you quite a few years back-- I undertook a double major/degree with a minor, and set my goal for graduation the usual 4 years for a normal single degree and minor. I was successful, but my last two years were spent in school days, nights, summers, and even some weekends with a few independent study labs for my sciences). So, I would say you'd have to settle for second happiest grad, okay? lol

Great review, Shrya. Magnificently insightful and well-expressed. This is one from which ALL soon-to-be college students, as well as currently registered college students could sincerely benefit. Thanks for sharing the fruits of your experiences with us.

"I found myself postponing studying and projects/reports until the next day or week so that I could have fun socially. Too many parties and liquor, and not enough of hitting the books..."

Yup...that has happened to me as well. It's always easy to say "I'm gonna concentrate on studying tonight" but it's so much tougher to actually follow through on your committment. Only too often have I found myself procrastinating much more than I wanted to.

Great advice Shyra for future and present college students alike. It definitely takes patience, determination, and prioritizing to succeed.

Life Happens (Reply to this comment)
by neomartin
What you say about college life is true. It took me two tours of college spanning ten years with a hiatus of a few years between tours to realize that.

In my case, it would have been more beneficial for me to start college later-- I needed life experience and work experience first before resuming school for higher learning. As you noted in your opinion, life happens.

You have a very polished looking good review, and I think it would be even better if you noted what what your expectations were before going to college, how the actuality differed, what people should beware of, and what you enjoy most. This is a good review, but if you'd like to edit, please send me the link and I'll reread/rerate. Thanks!

This is some super writing. I would add tolerance! Coming from a house where I'm the only kid to sharing a small room with a roommate...you learn to tolerate a lot of things! I enjoyed reading this. :)
