The food is as good as the service is BAD (Reply to this comment)
by jeffnyc1
We went there for dinner with our elderly Aunt. We arrived at 6:00 and ordered cocktails and began our conversation. After taking our drink order, the waitress came back to ask if we had or if we were ready to order. Our Aunt said she would like to order the pri-fix. The waitress said the order needed to be into the kitchen by 6:30 and it was now 6:33. We asked if she could make an exception, and she said "no." So, we commented how we had been sitting there for 20 minutes before she even walked over. The waitress said "Well, I could tell you were not yet ready to order." Come on now, good service means never leaving a table alone for 20 minutes before they order, unless it is requested. Anyway, the story gets worse; The manager, "Michael" comes over. He said "I've been watching the table the whole time and your waitress has stopped by several times." I asked if he was responsible for the whole floor, which is 3 rooms and two levels. He said "yes." And I asked why were we so special that he only watched our table. Well, he said I'm not going to play those kinds of games. The pre-fix menu in the kitchen is closed and everything is put away..there really is nothing I can do. Well, the pre-fix menu is a version of the regular menu...it's the same food. He lied again. Besides, there was something he could do, he could have bought a drink or a free desert or something other than calling us liars. The Manager, Michael, was so arrogant to assume his customers were so stupid. He also was messy looking and wore worn clothes. This is not a cheap restaurant. If you want to attract classy customers I think the restaurant should attract the same for its staff. Anyway, we were there and we couldn't take her somewhere else. So we ate. The food was actually very good and the service got better (the waitress abandoned our table and sent others to serve). However, I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone due to the rudeness of the management. I work hard for my money and if I ever treated a customer like I was treated, then I'd be collecting un-employment and not a paycheck. So, why spend my money in a place that doesn't appreciate it.

Don't worry, I'm not giving up on you, Teresa! One of these days, I know you will be unable to resist that special concert featuring Anne-Sophie Mutter, and you will find yourself wandering past my street as you make your way to Lincoln Center. And then suddenly you'll feel a swishing tail next to your legs, and it'll be D. He does have a way with women.

Thanks for the kind words, Robin! I do feel lucky, living in a place where there are so many dining choices, but at the same time, I love visiting smaller towns where the entire community has two or three favorite gathering spots, and the restaurant owners know the patrons at every table.

Yes, the cheese selection made me feel like I was in Europe. I love New York!
The only thing I wasn't thrilled with the service, but... okay, I'll write an epinion soon.

Good point - Ouest is pronounced "West." I think I shall add that to the review. Regarding the MH thing, we're in the same boat. I haven't quite figured out how I'm going to use it either although I am most appreciative of others who have honored me with the rating.

Thanks for the comment! I know how you feel. I try never to read food articles right before dinner or right before going to the market. The best time to read about delicious dishes - right before bed. Sweet dreams!

All the desserts are wonderful! The peach almond tart just paled a bit in comparison to the plum crisp. For something a little different though, I would recommend the creme fraiche panna cotta. The taste of fresh passion fruit juice is really startling. Thanks for dropping by.

Wow, thanks so much! My first MH and accompanied by such a gracious comment too. This really made my day. So I guess I have found another Ouest devotee. Halfway through our first meal at Ouest, we decided that we wanted to become regulars there. With so many places to try in the city, I find that I don't go back to the same restaurants very often, but Ouest has become one of the exceptions.
I really hope you do write a review of Artisinal. We tried them once, but it sounds like our experience wasn't as delightful as yours. I think we went too early - the restaurant had only been open a week - and perhaps we need to give them another chance. I would definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on Artisinal. Isn't the cheese selection amazing?

I want to taste everything you discribed....Quest sounds wonderful....I wish it had been in business when I lived in the upper West side a million years ago! LOL
This review (and all your reviews)show that epinions bestowed these new hats, (titles?) to some very deserving writers. Congratulations..:)
You continually make me hungry.

an unusual combo, but then again, all the deserts sound wonderful (and wonderfully written) so I probably wouldn't mind.

Most helpful indeed (Reply to this comment)

I love this restaurant as well, and your writing definitely made me want to visit again soon. Today I found another great restaurant- Artisanal on 32nd St.- wonderful, wonderful cheese (maybe I'll write an epinion on it soon- although I can't write restaurant reviews like you can).
By the way, I loved being able to rate this epinion as "Most Helpful"!
