Socket to Me, Baby!

If you are looking for new components, I recommend a socket configuration. If you are looking for an inexpensive setup, go with a slot configuration.

Although I would personally take a much harder stance against slot-based configurations (primarily because they so completely lack upgradeability and support for newer CPU's), this editorial does a good job of mentioning the many disadvantages of going with a slot CPU, unlike several other editorials in this topic that practically treat the two (slot vs socket) as equals.

One minor quibble: while slot-based CPU's and motherboards are certainly cheaper since they're so old, it's worth noting that socket-based technologies are actually cheaper and easier to manufacture due to their smaller size and more "streamlined" design. Yet another reason to go with socket-based technologies, IMO.

Good review,
