Good Opinion -- couple of other things to consider... (Reply to this comment)

Nice review of this Panasonic air conditioner. They make some of the finest quality home appliances there are. And efficient, too.

Here are a couple of additional things to consider: Modern window a/c units are SUPPOSED to collect water inside. That improves efficiency because the fan picks up the water and throws it against the outside condenser coil, where it helps to keep that coil cooler and makes the air conditioner cool better. It's kind of like getting a certain percentage of your air conditioning for free. However, as you said, you need to dump out the water by removing that plug or tipping the air conditioner some before removing it from the window, or else you'll leave a trail of water as you carry it.

Also, you mentioned a surge protector on your living room (big) a/c. Air conditioners do not need surge protectors, and should not be run through them because most do not have high enough amperage ratings to support the current drain of an a/c unit, especially a big one like you describe. The reason why this a/c ruined the surge protector is because it constantly demanded more power than the surge protector was rated for and caused it to overheat. This is a fire hazard. Get rid of any surge protector you have the a/c plugged into and plug it directly into a properly grounded wall outlet. If you have to use an extension cord, purchase one especially for heavy appliances (wire gauge of 12, amperage rating of at least 15 amps).

Thank you. :) I usually shy away from reviewing appliances, because I feel I don't really know what to say about them. So I try to review them only when, for some reason, I feel like I have something to say.

and friends call me The Fresh Air Fiend because I lurk about, opening windows when no one is looking. Some days air conditioning is necessary. This was (again) a well-written piece by someone who obviously loves the product. Good job!
