From Blue Bloods to Penanggalans, a consideration of the vampire genre...

The vampire genre is the most popular horror category, but it suffers from a lack of classic films. Here's a list of my ten best undead movies.

Sadly I realize I've seen only your #1 and #10 choices. I have, however, seen one of the finest vampire films ever made--Andy Warhol's Dracula. {imagine facetious tone here} Looks like I have some vampire film viewing to do, but it can wait until after Christmas.

Great job!

Thanks, Wordwalker, it's really a seminal film in the genre.

Thanks again,

Thanks, Ben. The folks at White Wolf did a good job of adapting the genre, it's too bad that KINDRED wasn't more successful.

vampire films is something I have never had much interest in, except from the whole White Wolf concept of vampires in our backyard in some global illuminati-like conspiracy.

when I saw this review posted, I knew to expect a thought-provking look at the genre. great stuff.

Vormacian,

Bigelow's career took a wrong turn, especially after she hooked up with that TITANIC guy. I'll have to give BLADE a look-see now.

Thanks,

Dear ebrown2: From the traces of blood on the masthead, I see we are in the hands of an expert on this subject. I doubt I'll see a better list, and you cover the inner psychology of the popularity of vampirism.

You have my first Most Helpful.

All the best.

Shannon,

Hmmm, you're running out of vampire movies, eh?

How about a trip to Turkey...

I am glad to see the inclusion of Near Dark, which I thought was a good film in many respects.

I didn't particularly like Blade, but it's pretty good, worth a look, and not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.

Cheers!

Paglia has important things to say, but intellectual consistency and taste are not her strong points.

Shannon,

LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH would go on my "10 Most Underrated/Obscure Vampire Movies list." VAMPYR is also good, but it just doesn't make the cut. I'd put it at 11. I'm also glad to see that you've seen VALERIE. (g)

Thanks again!

Romero's little vampire film is really unjustly neglected and ridiculously hard to find. I haven't seen BLADE yet, as it seemed from reviews and trailers to be another stupid Snipes action vehicle. I'm familiar with the original Marvel character, and I wasn't too happy with them over-amping him for the film.

Thanks for the comment!

Ernie,

You knew you'd have me hooked with this one. :) The only film I ever really waffle back and forth on is Valerie, I guess I just have to be in the right mood for it to be considered one of the tops. And a nod to Blacula as well.

Oh, and I had to credit you with a hardy chuckle for ... This celebration of pagan and mythic themes is the horror movie Camille Paglia would make, if she had taste ...

No mention of Dreyer's Vampyr or even Let’s Scare Jessica To Death? ... sniffle. Have you seen Fessenden's Habit yet? I would be curious to get your feedback on it as I thoroughly enjoyed it. I cannot wait to get a peek at his newest, Wendigo (especially after reading Kipp's (ZentropaJK) offsite review on it).

Terrific read, terrific. :)

Excellent list with excellent choices! (Reply to this comment)

This is a pretty impressive list. I especially like your mention of "Martin" which is a surprisingly very rare film to find someone who knows something about it. And "Near Dark" is such a wonderful film, that proves your point about the fame of Vampires. Never once in the entire movie do they use the word, or even describe exactly what they are.

I'm curious about why you don't like Coppola's "Dracula". I thought it was very faithful to the book and captured the mood better than any of the Vampire films since the 30's. I'm also curious what you think about "Blade", since it was certainly not a traditional Vampire film, but I really liked some of the plot elements, like the tatoo's on the neck's of their familiars, the business like nature of living with the humans, and especially the concept of what it takes to create a 'day walker'.
