Good job! (Reply to this comment)
by Yzerman
I agree, we all need to leave comments. Some nights I leave comments on 75 percent of the reviews I read, or at least try to leave one comment for each reviewer I read. But there are other nights when I don't have as much time to leave comments. I do try to always leave comments when I rate something NH or SH, unless I see that three or four comments have already been left on that review.
I have noticed that people are leaving more comments now than I have ever seen here, so maybe Epinions has finally done something right!

Another Reason (Reply to this comment)
by bperreault
Some epinioner, forgotten who, a long time ago said comments are like birthday presents. I agree. Someone cares enough or enjoyed your review to leave a comment. The first email alert I go to is the comments on my reviews and I always try to respond. Many times I have left a comment and there was no response. Makes me think they are only interested in the penny.

I must admit (Reply to this comment)
by DrDad
that I have left low ratings without leaving a comment. However, I have resolved myself to try to always leave a comment if I rate lower than Helpful, or if my rating is against the norm (a Helpful in a sea of VHs).
I agree with your assessment of the value of comments, and I appreciate what you do here at Epinions, both in the reviews that you write and the manner in which you rate.
Cheers,
Bret

You really made me think. So often, when I'm browsing the just-in section, I simply read and rate, never bothering to comment, even when I chuckle out loud, or something really strikes a chord in me. I vow to do better! Thanks again, and so glad you did come back! Suzanne

Wonderful review! (Reply to this comment)
by 2buzy
I had a couple of comments on my first review that really helped me -- it told me what everyone was looking for in my reviews. I REALLY appreciated them taking the time to help me -- one was an advisor and the other was not. Both said to email them if I added things and they would re-rate it. I did, wrote them both, but only the non advisor came back. LOL
I try to leave some of those same comments that helped me.
I enjoyed reading this review and am leaving a comment telling you so since those are always nice to hear :o)

Glad to hear that commenting isn't just for editors. I've been leaving some comments lately, but every time I did I'd feel a little funny about it...should I be doing this...I'm not an editor...will someone get the wrong idea...and so on. Your epinion made me feel much better!

You know... (Reply to this comment)
by Caprig
..from day one (after a kind ladycynic took the time to show me the ropes) I have felt that any time a rating of less than VH is given that a person should be told why.
There have been a small handful of times when I have not been able to comment on a few lower reviews (computer froze and could not get back).
I view rating as a responsibility and if you are not willing to tell a person WHY you rated them lower, then you should not be rating.
Sometimes comments can be an area to sound off to someone you know if you don't agree with their take on something or even the book they rated or whatever.
Again, though a thoughtful comment included is a must. IF they did a great job, TELL THEM!
Heck, I could go on and on about this, but suffice it to say that the biggest problem in our businesses, society, families and government today is COMMUNICATION.
Thanks for addressing such an important topic.
I gave you my precious MH (just kidding about the precious, BTW)

. . . to leave a comment the first time I encounter a new Epinionater.
If I read a couple of their postings on the same day, however, I might only comment on one of them.
Your suggestion that all of us should ensure that our heads don't outgrow our hats is right on.

your thoughts. 99% of the time I comment and I 'm certainly no Editor, haven't even written in a while. But I think everyone likes hearing from other members . So although I am still Hatless I'm still going to comment. Great points.

Hi Laurie! Great to see you back. I always enjoy your work.
I am an editor NOT-wannabe. I'm not always sure if members do want feedback. When the editor titles popped up, then I felt that I should be leaving comments. Epinions pretty much said that.
One thing I did was rate and comment on one topic--the Amazon section under Online. I wrote a general piece about that and hoped that would be helpful.
My style typically would be to email and to talk off-the-record. I just think it is easier to deal with suggestions and ideas one-on-one vs in a comment section.
I know Epinions likes to count those comments (and that can impact on those funny hats), but I still think that personal email can be more helpful. I am more comfortable with positive comments than with offering suggestions in an area where everyone can read.
That may be the teacher in me though. Often I pull a kid aside rather than try to give details during a group discussion.
I wonder if other members run into this same thing . . . I want to help, but I like to do that sort of thing in private for the most part.

Exactly right! (Reply to this comment)
by grimjack2
I totally agree with you about the newbie thing. I make it a point to try and write something encouraging when I see a review that isn't much better than 'SH', but I can sense that there is still something special in their writing.
I also always make it a point to leave a comment whenever I rate something 'NH' or 'SH', unless it is so obvious that the writer didn't care how it gets rated.

And I think some people comment and some don't regardless of any ole dang hat. I see more comments from the lets say seasoned writers than those more new to the site. Some are afraid of retaliation too, I know I have gotten Emails slamming me for a low rating, even with a comment.
Now I for one don't care but some folks do. Your article has made me realize how important comments are even if given for low ratings. Ahem, what more to say? Welcome back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Back (Reply to this comment)
by glomarrone
Hi,
I was very disappointed to hear you had left Epinions. I'm happy to see you are back. Your epinions is just great. I tried to give you the Most Helpful rating but the site reminded me I had already given it out. I try to leave comments on every epinion in my category of Newspapers and Magazines. I only leave comments in other areas if I have something really important to tell them to add to their epinion. If I find a review very interesting, I'll also leave a note.
I find more members are leaving notes now with the new category of Editors. I guess Editors can't comment on every low rated epinion or they'd be at their computers all day. I'm wondering if those editors were editors in the area that the epinions was in? If one of them is, that editor should have definitely left an epinion.
See you again.

Unreal (Reply to this comment)
by teddiec
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that an editor exists that doesn't know comments are a curtesy that we are all allowed to give, but I am! This member is either hasn't been on the site very long, or never paid much attention-either reason would seem to question his or her qualification as Editor. :(
I've also seen a few who write general comments articles to ask questions that are clearly answered on the member page! It's a shame really, some members are giving the good Editors who really are deserving and helpful a bad name.

Try writing a very helpful review in games :) (Reply to this comment)
by mcmaster
I consider myself a serious online strategy gamer. I run a ranking ladder for games. I still can't seem to write a very helpful review in games. I was left a comment though. "Do not make your lists vertical, make them horizontal..."
lol...
I have looked at their reviews and reread mine several times. I do not know what else I could have wrote.
I guess it was just not very helpful.
Still looking for the games niche.

thanks for reminding to me to leave MORE comments - I am trying hard in the 2 categories I am Editor in, and have done so less in categories I am less familiar with - though I have recd lately some nice emails re updates people could make -
one guy replied to me "see, I knew I shouldn't have asked a TEACHER for help on my review" :o) -- it made me chuckle - Kimm

by NetDanzr
Sometimes you know something about the product that has not been covered by the review. Sometimes you still rate the review VH, but it's always nice to mention what you know in your comment. It helps the author, it helps the reader and it helps you as a "wannabe editor" ;)

Keep up the great writing...kath

In my early Epinion days I would often go back to see my epinion swamped with SH...but why? Often times I never knew because no one would bother to mention. That's just not fair.
I too am guilty am guilty of "hit and runs" but I do try to take a moment to say hi and at least make a short suggestion to help them along.
Epinions is a community and we must all work together to make it work and welcome the newbies.

I'm writing as fast as I can.... (Reply to this comment)
by melissasrn
Even though I'm definitely NOT rating this one SH or NH, a comment is definitely in order nonetheless. While I am guilty along with most everyone else of leaving my SH and moving on (although I DO leave more comments than I used to), this is something that I am consciously working on. If I have something in common with the writer or they are a newbie, it's easy. But if it's someone writing their 50th SH, I'm not even motivated to bother. Every day, I'm trying a little harder though.
WELCOME BACK LAURIE!! I for one have missed you :-)
