For the travelers

Aug 24 '01

The Bottom Line The Sony PCG-SR17 is the perfect laptop because it is light and small but "big" and powerful.

As you can probably tell from some of my other "epinions" I have traveled extensively in my life. When doing this I always try to keep in touch with family and friends. Keeping in touch used to mean that I would write letters and postcards and also make phone calls but now everything is a lot different.

Now, with the internet, I can send emails which arrive at my relative/friend instantly. I can also instant message them making my whole process of communication much easier. Of course to do this I either need to spend all my time in internet cafes or I can get my own laptop.

Since a laptop can also be used for business purposes it can't be a slow, huge thing. The laptop should be powerful, but portable. Well I have found what seems couldn't exist. A small and light, "big" and powerful machine.

I call it the Sony Vaio PCG-SR17. This tiny laptop is perfect for a traveler and a business person. It only weighs about 3 pounds yet it has a 20 GB hard drive and a 700 MHz processor. As for Ram this has a ton of memory for its size at 128MB. Another feature that is great for anyone is all of its digital photo and movie capabilities. It comes with many different software programs, all excellent, and is compatible to all Sony products.

Other specifications include its 56K modem as well as an i.LINK S400 interface which allows it high-speed data transfer among other Sony products. Another way to bring information to and from this is its MagicGate memory stick media slot. This allows you to take memory sticks, which are about the same size as a piece of gum and can hold 8,16 and up to 128 MB, and transfer photos, video, documents, etc between almost anything.

If it is another Sony product is will most likely have a MagicGate memory stick media slot. If you want to transfer things between a computer of another brand and any Sony product with the memory stick then you just buy a floppy adapter. This is a floppy disk where you have a place to put the memory stick in and then can put it in the floppy drive instead of the MagicGate.

The only thing that is not perfect about this laptop is that, since it is so small, something had to be sacrificed. The drives. But external drives are really not as bad as everyone thinks and I'm much happier to lose the weight in the laptop. In fact what is better with external drives is that you lose the weight and you just need to bring the one drive or so that you need just then (such as you might need the CD-ROM but not the DVD, floppy, or CD-RW). Also the keyboard is not hard to type on. I find it quite easily and I'm doing it right now!

I managed to get a deal and purchase the whole system on Ubid for $1500, about $500 below Sony's price. This was also when Sony was offering a deal that gave you the CD-Rom free with purchase so I got that too. I must tell you that I have been happier with this system than I could possibly have imagined and I am sure you will be too.

So if you need a laptop I would recommend Sony. They make tiny tiny ones like the SR series and the Picturebook and also have more powerful systems like the All-in-One series and the new GR series. If you are looking for a desktop Sony is also a great buy. All of Sony's laptops and desktops have great graphics and are wonderful for digital photo editing and things like that because of Sony's backround in the entertainment industry!
