John Grisham took two elements of our society which had been done to death in books and movies -- the Mafia and the legal thriller -- and turned it into one of the most memorable stories I've ever read.
Along with Mitch McDeere, the protagonist, you are swept into the world of big-time corporate law. You see the the glitz, the money, the cars, and the fortune that comes with employment at the richest law firms. You also see the pitfalls -- the inhuman hours the lawyers put in, the effect on family.
And lurking behind that is something much more dangerous. You eventually learn the real secret behind Mitch's firm -- their most important client. When Mitch learns what his firm's really up to, his life -- and his wife's -- are in incredible danger.
Grisham then turns up the heat, and delivers a thrilling ride as Mitch fights the FBI and his firm.
Grisham uses snappy dialogue, larger than life villains and heroes to drive the story forward. It's a quick read, and I think it's meant to be.
There's not much of a message here -- except "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is."
the real pleasure is the STORY. you'll be instantly hooked. Mitch is a likable character, and you'll flip the pages fast, wanting to know how he's going to get himself out of this mess.
