Moon House Restaurant: Where We Always Order One Dish Too Many
by Epicure | Aug 27 '01
A tempting array of Shanghainese specialties. While not all of the dishes are top-notch, there are enough stand-outs, especially among the appetizers, to make a meal here quite satisfying.

Great to see you around again! How has Northern CA been treating you? Thank you for your vote of confidence.

Northern CA has been great. Nice weather (though I hate how it is warm at noon and freezing cold after the sun sets). Great to be a student again. Taking classes ranging from Economics to Politics to Education! Though all the work has precluded time from epinions.

How ever did you get to this one before I did?

Magic! :)

Malla,

Rather presumptuous aren’t we? I am always interested in hearing other people’s opinions regarding food and restaurants, especially if they have a different perspective than I have, but only if their comments are polite and thoughtful.

"....from the perspective of the average American palate that does not know what real Shanghai food tastes like." You don’t know me or what my background and experiences are, so I don’t know what basis you have for maligning my qualifications.

"How can you know if the restaurant is serving good authentic cuisine if you've never been to the place of the cuisine's origin?" There are many ways. Perhaps one has family, relatives or close friends from that country who can share their recipes and culinary experiences. Or maybe one has grown up in an ethnic community that is full of immigrants from a particular country. Orange County, CA is the perfect example. Outside of Vietnam, Orange County has the largest concentration of Vietnamese in the world. There are many restaurants, grocery stores, entire shopping centers where the owners and almost all of the patrons are Vietnamese. I don’t think they tailor their food for the American palate, so a person can get a great education in Vietnamese cuisine by spending time in that community. It’s my belief that any open- minded person who has the inclination to immerse him or herself in the culinary heritage of another country can receive plenty of exposure to good authentic ethnic dishes without ever having visited the country of origin.

Of course, you are free to disagree with me on this point - it is just one opinion after all. That’s the beauty of epinions when it works - you have so many differing viewpoints and perspectives. I don’t consider my perspective to be that of the "average American palate." I don’t think the average American palate would recognize the authenticity of Moon House because most people haven’t had access to the wealth of Shanghainese food that I have. You obviously think more highly of Moon House than I do, but there’s no need to become offended by a difference in opinion and resort to disparaging insinuations.

my word malla, so veritably dripping with disdain for someone who seems to agree with most of epicure's sentiments.

calm down a bit, many of us have come to trust epicure's palate.

as for shanghainese, I have two shanghainese friends who both swear by Shanghai Cuisine in Chinatown (though neither knows each other). But Moon House seems worth trying.

mmm, winter melon... definitely an acquired taste. and i still have mixed feelings on those soup buns, after seeing 3 friends together consumer nearly 200 of them. scary thought!

I envy your trip to China. I have yet to go. Though I have been planning it every summer for a few years now. maybe next! hope you're having fun.

You know, there is a simple solution to end all your suffering. New York is but a short plane ride away. ;) With respect to Chinese food, I have been lucky in that I have always lived near large Chinese communities (LA, SF and now NY), so good Chinese restaurants were abundant. I've never been to China before though, so I am very curious how food there compares to food here. Look forward to catching up with you in a couple weeks.

While I was living at home, my mom who studied nutrition at one point in her life made it her personal mission to convert me into a fan of winter melon. Now that she's succeeded, she has moved on to bitter melon. Why must she torture me so? I've already told her that there is simply no hope that she will ever win this battle. Guess she likes challenges.

Thanks for dropping by,

I'm not familiar with Hung Fats, but that doesn't mean anything considering the fact that there are an endless number of restaurants in Chinatown, and I am usually a creature of habit. I have my favorites that I always patronize. Occasionally something new will catch my eye, like Moon House, but most of the time, you'll probably find me at Shanghai Cuisine. Thanks for the good wishes!

That winter melon soup you mentioned sounds very similar to things my Chinese aunties make... I haven't quite developed a taste for it yet, the squash-like texture takes some getting used to.

Have a safe trip, and I too, look forward to hearing all about your adventures when you get back! China...some people have all the luck. ;)

2 weeks in China, I can't wait to read about it when you return.....

Have you ever heard of a Chinese Restaurant on Mott Street called Hung Fats? My husband and I used to eat there when we were dating and up until a few years we would go whenever we were in NY..Haven't been in a while so I was wondering if it was still there.

Once again, you have made me hungry!
:)

Have a wonderful and safe trip
Bon Voyage

Thanks, Robin! I plan to take very careful notes during our trip, so I can write about all the wonderful sights, sounds, smells and tastes of China. I have heard that Beijing has restaurants representative of every region of China, many of which you would never find here. I cannot wait to try them all. Thank goodness we will be doing a lot of walking during this trip.

Spoken like a true food lover. I guess you can never order too much as long as you don't mind leftovers. The soft tofu dishes do reheat really well as do the noodle and rice cake dishes. Too bad that's not the case for the soup dumplings. Mr. Epicure could probably live on those.

Thanks for the comment!

Shanghai-style dishes reheat, really, really well - often tasting as good or better "the second time around".

I like your clever title, but is there really such a thing as one dish too many?

Excellent review and best regards,

Tom
