The Bottom Line I recommend not lying to your child, they are smarter than we give them credit for.

I am a mother of 2 toddler boys and recently we had a loss of our family dog. I know what you all are saying, "it's only a dog, they are replaceable". But they aren't, they become a part of your family. Sure its not like your child passing, but it is kinda the same. When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband bought me a dog to keep me company while I was on bed rest due to complications with my pregnancy. This was and will always be the greatest animal we have ever had. He kept a close eye on my son from the first day that we brought him home. He was never an arms length away from him. As he learned to crawl the dog was right there, almost helping him. If a stranger got anywhere near my son, the dog stood in front of my son as if to shield him from harm. The same thing when we had our second child. Our children and our dog were the best of friends, through everything. When the kids got hurt the dog came over and licked them and layed right next to them as if to comfort them. The day that he died was the hardest day of my life, for I had to go and explain to my 3 year old why his best friend isn't here and wont ever be coming back. I didn't really know just how to tell him that knowing that he is rather young to understand why is he dead, and where did he go, and why did his dog have to die. I tried to tell my son that his doggy went to heaven, but he didn't understand that. Then I tried to tell him that he isn't coming back and he asked, "why mommy why"? My son asked if he could see the dog. We really didn't want him to have to go through that, but didn't know what else to do and how else to explain it to him. So we wrapped him up in a blanket, and showed him to our son. He got it, he understood just why his doggy isn't coming back. He wanted to help us bury him and then he came up to me and said,"mommy, doggy playing with moon". I just sat there and sobbed. he understood, children are smarter than we give them credit for aren't they?
