The Bottom Line With the success of this series There will be a lot of imitators. I doubt if many will be as entertaining as the original. READ THIS SERIES!
In Rhapsody and Prophecy, Elizabeth Haydon took a genre plagued by repetition and familiarity and turned it on its ear to the delight of fantasy fans everywhere. She continues this tradition in Destiny: Child of the Sky. Returning are the three main characters, foretold by prophecy to be the worlds saviors. Rhapsody and Achmed trek across the land in search of the children of the F'dor in order to separate the demon's blood giving Achmed a way of hunting the F'dor. While Grunthor stays behind preparing the forces of Ylorc to battle against the wild attacks that have been plaguing the rest of the continent. All the while the F'dor's master plan for the destruction of the world marches toward its climax. The characters we have grown to love in this series continue to grow and some of the minor characters from the first two books are fleshed out even more. Fans of the irreverent Achmed will not be disappointed. Haydon combines her wonderful characterizations, breathtaking battle scenes, political intrigue, astonishing magic and the often wondered about secret identity of the F'dor into a story that is supremely satisfying. The book is full of the surprise twists and turns that have illuminated Haydon's work to date. I wasn't sure about the identity of the F'dor until it was spelled out in the book. (And believe me, I tried to figure it out!) The final two hundred or so pages kept me reading all night long. I didn't want to put it down. Some have termed the Rhapsody series a new sub-genre; Fantasy/Whodunnit. With the success of this series I expect there will be a lot of imitators springing up. I doubt if many will be as entertaining as the original. |
