I was thinking about tackling this list, but I have to admit that I could never do justice to the subject as well as you have.
standing applause!!

John,
What a great list! And any list that includes Life of Brian earns the highest recommendation from me. Great stuff, per usual.

You know I share your love of everything Alexie, (Reply to this comment)

and Smoke Signals in particular, but it is more a viewpoint of the Native American (and one tribe in particular) than a religious piece. Sprititual yes, but religious... nah. Safe to say that we are still waiting for that movie to be made. But then I'm preaching to the converted here. Exquisite list John, filled with several pictures I've never seen at Blockbuster.

"keanu reeves is perfectly cast" (pardon my paraphras)
you know he gets perfectly cast quite often. he has a knack for it it seems. from bill and ted to the matrix to speed.
anyway, one movie that exemplifies a budhism movie is the Korean film "When bodhi dharma comes to the east" or something. i found it boring, but it was basically a primer on buddhism hidden in some dull story. dull, but an effective way to learn about buddhism. and probably the only exemplar of korean film i've seen.

Have seen Pow-wow Highway... enjoyable, but not for this category. Smoke Signals comes closer. There's Three Warriors, but it's got a little too much cheese and is hard to find.

Pow-wow Highway for the Native American category? Maybe not! I'd probably dust off Maya Deren's "Comes the Horseman" for Afro-Caribbean.
But a valiant and fascinating list!

I must say that I was really quite blown away by your review. The topic matter was excellent, and your views very poignant...there were (of course), other movies I would have put in there, but your choices were really excellent.
Have you ever seen the English movie East is East, by the way, because that's a phenominal movie examining Islam versus Christianity within a migrant family.
Anyways, me stop rambling now, all I really wanted to say was that this review was excellent!!
Cheers...
Mattels.
