My top earning epinion: WHY?Aug 30 '01 (Updated Sep 27 '01) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line The vast majority of the earnings on good epinions are from INCOME SHARE, not EROYALTIES. Don't ignore the "outsiders". A few months ago, I was doing some research because I wanted to purchase a scanner for use with my computer. I did the traditional searches with the big search engines, trying to find some good reviews of scanners. One thing I learned is that scanners suck in general, and the vast majority of reviews haven't been positive. Finally, I found one that was written about the HP ScanJet 2200C in a local Toronto publication, and it seemed quite positive. Based on that, I decided to purchase the scanner. In some of the reviews I looked at, I found one that had been written here on epinions.com. The link "Write your own opinion!" caught my eye, and I said to myself, I should write a decent review about this scanner after I've had a chance to use it. So I did. That was my first epinion, and now I'm totally hooked, writing several more. :) You can read the review in question here: http://www.epinions.com/content_28367097476 Even though this was my first epinion (and not a very good one by my own developing standards, I might add) but it has earned me more money than any other. To date, $1.73. But the surprising thing is that this particular review has been viewed only 21 times by members, and 154 times by non members. The vast majority of the earnings on this epinion are from INCOME SHARE, not EROYALTIES. Obviously the exact formula or scheme for distributing income share is kept secret by epinions. But one thing my first epinion has shown me more than anything else is that in the end, you will get your fair share. Targeting members within epinions exclusively via things like leaving comments, rating other reviews, developing a web of trust, are very nice and will help you. However for every member of epinions, there are thousands of non-members on the Internet who are searching for information on products and services. I believe there are some categories that are better for this behaviour than others. In general, the quality and performance of most scanners is mediocre, so the educated consumers are really researching their purchases in this area, because it's been likely they've been burned before with a cheap or crummy scanner. None of the other 24 reviews that I've written come close to showing the hit demographic that this one has. I belive that if you write reviews on the right products, more and more people will keep reading them. Some reviews I have written have been read by 5 people (probably while it was on the recent reviews list) and then fades into the dark reaches of the site, never to be read again. So in some respects, it might be a waste of time to write these reviews because of the low return on investment. In other cases it might be a waste of time when 20 people have already written a review on the product. (unless perhaps you're the only one rating a product positively or negatively) I hope this information is useful to you. Please leave your comments below. I'd be glad to hear from you. Thank you for your support and God bless! |
