Chocolate in the PI (Reply to this comment)
by LuzonTS
Hey looks like you got to taste their version of Chocolate. Not quite the lucious treat we are used to because they mix it a bit differently so that it can take the heat. Our chocolate products begin to melt within seconds of crossing from the cool confines of an air conditioned aircraft to the hot and humid tropical environment of the Philippines.

what we take for grant, here in the U.S. Can u say "spoiled"?
Great review. HTP had to have been proud, even if this one was only a 'runner-up'. Enjoyed it, Pam, and will make sure I remember this... for posterity's sake. Take care,

Pam-
I've read one too many DiverPam stories. How do I know? Because now I have taken over as sort of a pee-proxy for you. (Only a minor bit of paperwork will change hands.) I will be constantly focused on my assignment, not allowing distractions to slow the process, and even working through lunch to insure that all scheduled maintenance is completed daily.

Thank you, Eddie.
I appreciate your comment. And I truly hope I did not insult you. I appreciate your honesty and certainly never thought you were hiding behind a new screen name.
I thought maybe I had annoyed someone so much that they signed up for Epinions just to leave a comment. LOL
Again, I thank you for your comment.
Take care,
Pam

I keep forgetting to remove my email alerts to this review's comments, but now I'm glad I haven't because I was able to read this reply. I do understand what you tried to do with this review. It just sunk a little deeper to home and was read with a slightly different perspective than most readers since 75% of my relatives live there. I do thank you for the kind words you wrote in this latest reply to Free's comment.
On that note. I have no relation to Free. *laugh* I was happy to see someone felt the same way I did, but upon clicking to his/her profile I saw that he/she is hiding behind the anonymity of a brand new screen name to post that comment. So, just incase you thought that was me or someone I know who was backing me up, it isn't. This might get me some revenge ratings from Free and/or Free's other accounts. So be it. It just means more money for me, eh? Well, actually I guess it's possible Free was an non member then signed up simply to write this comment. Who knows.
Again, great review. I hope you get to go diving in the Philippines sometime. I never have, but my cousin says it's very beautiful out there.

I'm sorry if you were offended in any way by my review.
There was no intent to malign anyone - except maybe myself. I was trying to find humor and laugh at myself as I reacted to new and unfamiliar surroundings.
This was just an example of what happens to someone dropped in the midst of a totally different culture thousands of miles away. I'm sure people have similar reactions when they come to Memphis and learn some people eat "chittlins" (much grosser than ox tail, I assure you) -- yuck!
We are all creatures of habit and when we are outside our comfort zone - we are uncomfortable and sometimes unprepared. I am as much out of my element when I go to New York City (in a different way) as when I go to a country thousands of miles away.
As I mentioned there was a sharp contrast between the luxurious Shangri-La hotel and the conditions I found upon leaving the hotel.
I didn't mention how saddened I was (on the trip to the airport) where I saw evidence of thousands of people living in abject poverty on the side of a hill in flimsy lean-to "houses".
Because the intent of the review was to be light-hearted and funny and poke fun at myself I also didn't reveal that I cried and had to turn my head away at some of the sights of the poverty. I had never seen such a dramatic case of the "haves" and "have-nots" before.

Maybe you should try to understand the culture rather than maligning the land, people, food, folkways, situation, etc. etc.

I can only imagine the ingredients...however, I did tread very lightly across the foot bath. Once the soles of my shoes dried, I didn't smell anything.
LOL! It was probably Mr. Clean or something... who knows???

What exactly was in the anti-hoof-in-mouth detergent? (Reply to this comment)
by grimjack2
I think it would be harder to get through the day with socks and shoes smelling like anit-bacterial liquid then it would be the bare foot thing. Didn't you shoes get stained and smell horrible after the trip?

A great review - I laughed at the thought of it being so hot that the hens on board laid hard boiled eggs. Now that's pretty darned hot.
Great review.

. . . of a concern when I traveled to Subic.
But then - I did arrive by submarine.
[Milky Ways were in short supply but we had plenty of powdered eggs!]
Nice posting.

I liked your original review, but this time around it ended up giving more than just the airlines a bad rep. :( The Philippines IS pretty junky, but hey, it's a third world country afterall.
There's actually plenty to do at Subic Bay. The FedEx hub is a good ways away from anything fun, so maybe that's why you missed the touristy areas. I love wakeboarding and jet skiing there. Eating out at nice restaurants is great there too. Since they're a major port, they get all the fresh ingredients right away. Speaking of eating out, it's not like all they eat are Ox Tails and other scary things. They just do have ethnic items on their menus as well. I went for Italian and Sushi places a lot.
It was a still a great read though. And although I agree with a lot of what you mentioned (scary arilines), I just felt that I had to speak up for my ancestral homeland... or something. :)

I wish I'd saved a copy of the comment I made on your original one, but it was so long and I'm both too busy and too lazy today to reproduce it!
However, I'll say this much: This Epinion rocks, and I can hardly wait for the first runner-up and the winner! :o)
