My Simple Approach To DRY Skin Care!
Sep 05 '01
The Bottom Line The MOST important tip for slowing the aging process of skin is protect it from the SUN! And moisturize! Also don't forget to SMILE!
The BEAUTY category is not a specialty of mine but I have decided that I have a little bit to say. An unfortunate fact of all our lives is that if we are lucky enough to live a long life, we are all going to show signs of aging. Even the people who are able to afford surgical or medical treatments to look younger show their age, even though they show it less than those people who just go 'au naturale'.
My mother is a professional in the art of BEAUTY. She is schooled in skin and hair care and styling. She is 69 years old but looks to be in her early 50s. As is so often the case, I haven't been terribly interested in the subject of beauty. (My Mom says 'The shoemaker's children are bare-foot!) Under my mother's stern tuteledge I learned to keep clean and moisturized but the rest of a beauty regimen just wasn't interesting enough to me to devote much time to. I was and am a 'tom-boy'!
Growing up in Florida I found out quickly that make-up just melts off your face in a hot, humid climate. An elaborate hair-style was also fighting an uphill battle. Couple that with an unrelenting tropical sun and almost constantly blowing wind and a woman had her work cut out for her in Miami! Being young I got away with wearing no make-up and washing my hair daily and just letting it fall to my shoulders. I stayed suntanned from the time I was a preschooler until about 10 years ago. That was when it really sunk in that THE SUN was the main culprit in aging skin. Having DRY skin doesn't help either. My advice is geared to people with COMBINATION to DRY skin!
Luckily, I have always worn a hat of some kind when out in the sun, so my facial skin is still unlined and youthful. Gravity has wreaked a tiny bit of vengeance on my jaw line but I can live with that.
I DO have sun damage on the arms and legs, so always use sunscreen if going outdoors in the sun. The sun is only becoming more powerful as time goes by, so protect ALL exposed skin.
AS FOR THE FACE-Here are a few pointers that can perhaps be helpful.
1. Find a gentle product to wash your face, one that agrees with your skin type. (Skin type changes as we age, oily, combination, or dry-we can all go through each one of these during our life, as we grow older. However much money you spend on a product is up to you. There are many products to choose from and what's right for one person may not be right for another! Look until you find the one you like! READ INGREDIENTS! Then wash your face and neck once to twice daily (twice if you wear make-up!).
2. Also find a moisturizer that agrees with your skin type and keep the dry areas protected. There are also good moisturizers for skin prone to break outs (Clean & Clear comes to mind). Experiment until you find one your face likes! I found that I am allergic to lanolin after trying a rather expensive moisturizer a few years ago, so, for me it was live and learn! I gave that moisturizer to someone who CAN use it!
3.DON'T FORGET YOUR NECK! If you do, it will let you know about it 20 years from now! That includes the area known as the 'decolletage', from the chin down the neck to the cleavage. Use the face products on these areas and keep them moisturized!
4. USE SUNSCREEN! This is something I didn't do, as my peer group worked on their tans. I was as tanned as the rest but I always wore a hat at the beach. I had heard somewhere that the sun MIGHT be bad for your skin, so I was thinking--SKIN=FACE. I'm glad I did. I wish I'd thought SKIN=ENTIRE BODY, but that's an 'oh, well' for me now!
5. DON'T SUNBATHE! I still drive by the beach and see people out on the sand all oiled up and sunning. Oh course that's their choice but sunning is over for me! But outdoor activities can be practiced with sunblock and long-sleeved beach cover-ups and hats. Remember to reapply sunblock on lips and eye lids too! Wear sunglasses!
6. EXFOLIATE! EXFOLIATE! Use a buff puff, apricot scrub, hydroxies, bath mitts or a bath brush but get the dead skin cells off regularly. Do this all over the body as well as the face. My aunt calls it 'Scrapping the barnacles off the old hull'! Then moisturize generously.
7. BE HAPPY AND ENJOY LIFE! It takes more muscles to frown than to smile and aren't smile 'wrinkles' a lot more attractive anyway? The BEAUTY from within a person shows on their face by middle age, just like unhappiness etches deep lines as well.
8. EAT A HEALTHFUL DIET! If you know you are not eating enough to obtain all the vitamins and minerals you need, take a supplement. Vitamin E is great for the skin as well! Vitamin deficiency will show in the skin! AGAIN, read the ingredients in the vitamin tablets to make a selection.
I'm no expert on the subject of skin care but I have had pretty good results with even the little I do!
