Thank you. I was writing about a subject that a whole lot of other people know more about than I do. But then I thought, I can share some very important information about the basics of skin care, so I got over my shyness. Your comment made me feel like I did the right thing! TAKE CARE! DIANNE

I have had the same attitude to make up as you do. I seldom wear anything except lipstick and moisturizer with sunscreen. I have had skin cancer removed from my nose and keep watch over the other areas that had frequent burns and peels.
I did not know that the back of your calves often get skin cancer so will be more diligent with the sunscreen there too. Thanks for sharing.

What I have read on the subject of sun damage states that the worst damage is done when we are young (so my damage is extensive!). From what I understand every exposure that leads to a sunburn leaves damage that shows up down the road. I have already had a skin cancer (but not the melanoma type!) that I had to have removed. My Mom had a cancer on her nose that required a 'nose job' after it's removal (she was happy to have an insurance covered rhinoplasty!). Now it looks great but she was the one who would actually carry a parasol to the beach, she was so careful about the sun. We laughed at her but she was just ahead of her time! Maureen Reagan's death from melanoma is what brought this essay to my mind. That is so sad but it should make people realize it can happen to anyone. The doctors suggest a thorough examination of the entire body every six months, either by a friend or a physician, to look for suspicious sun-spots and moles. I have had an extreme amount of sun exposure though and my spots and freckles are not horrid to look at but people need to minimize their sun exposure for the health aspect as well as for beauty reasons!

I use a lotion type in the summer. If you are prone to break-outs, 'Clean and Clear' works well. But I have heard some people say it was too drying. In general, the lotion type moisturizers in a bottle are lighter than the cream type, usually in a jar. The reason I didn't recommend a particular brand is that each skin is different and what one person loves, another will just hate (or be allergic to!). The sunscreen 'Ocean Potion-Australian Xtreme Sunscreen-SPF 50 with Parsol 1789-Water/Sweat Resistant' is good for summer sun protection if you are not sensitive to any of the ingredients. It can go on the face and the body! I usually shop at the Super Walmart for new products to try, that way I don't spend a fortune!

A question about sunbathing (Reply to this comment)
by neomartin
It's been years since I've been to a beach for a suntan, but I have to ask: Is a sunbathing session done once in a while (say, once every few years) enough to cause serious problems? I can see how frequent and repeated exposure can cause problems, but I don't know if one time is too many times.

I am curious - (Reply to this comment)

with these recommendations, what actual products would you recommend?

I find a have different skin each 2 seasons - and now am at a loss for a light moisturizer that I can love - I use CLiniques Dramatically Different, but its too heavy for summer use --
