When you go shopping for cars try to be certain of your priorities and likes. My list contains good first cars that should appeal to almost everyone.

Here's a car that I find to be awesome. I drive a '97 Ford Contour GL. It's a nice sized car, gets good gas milage, and is very reliable. The only problem i have with it is the fact that the oil filter is in an odd spot, and you need to take out the front-right wheel to get to it easily. It also doesn't have a remote for the locks, but i personally like ccars without alarms

I own a 1997 Nissan Maxima SE, and would like to say that you can find 4th generation Maximas for under 10 grand if you look around. I would opt for the 5spd models

I want to address the last two comments. First of all thank you for taking the time to leave comments. I find them very helpful - be they positive or negative. I included the Ford Mustang primarily because it is an extremely fun car and I wanted to offer something in the sporty car category that would be a good choice. This is because not everyone will focus on the same qualities regardless of what might be in their best interest. And I had made very clear earlier that I felt reliablility was extremely important. As far as I am aware the mustang was not horrible in this regard, so I included it. (consumer reports actually recommends it for model years 94, 97-99)

Thank you for bringing the Lumina to my attention. I was aware of it, but have not heard such praises from its owners. One of my dad's good friends owns one and has not particularly praised it, but I do acknowledge they have a great record for reliability and are a great value, so they should be considered. I just want to say that I am not purposefully favoring foreign makes, but American cars have made huge strides in reliability, quality, and satisfaction in just the last couple of years. Most teens may be looking to cars that are before this time, when American cars were still lagging more behind. I do think though, that you must consider that throughout the '90s American automakers have focused VERY heavily on SUV's and pickups and these were not considered in my report.

Other than replacing the Ford Mustang (why you would recommend a car that have awful reliability and an engine that is bound to get kids into accidents is beyond me) with the Toyota Corolla or Honda Accord, I would say your top 10 list is good. But beware of Jettas. Volkswagens are well engineered, but have always been spotty on Reliability.

While I understand why the Civic is very popular with young drivers, it is not a car they should be learning on how to drive. Take a look at accident/injuries statistics and think about it.

I'm not a teen, but I'm cheap. So, I actually own two of the cars on your list. A 1992 Honda Accord and a 1991 Escort.

I think you picked the right cars for drivers who are concerned about not paying too much, but who want good transportation.

I am a Honda Civic owner (this is my second one) and I couldn't be happier.
