Re: Too weird... (Reply to this comment)

Yep, sounds like a good dream, Kate!
I certainly can recommend a course like this; it really gave us a good idea of the type of property we need, and what preparation work we would need to do with the fencing etc. It really gave us the confidence to think that we might be able to keep a couple of pigs.
I'll wish you luck!!

Too weird... (Reply to this comment)
by lyagushka
I've been thinking about pigs lately and wondering whether I might ever be capable of including them as part of a tiny homestead-farm. I love the thought of having a single breeding sow, and letting her and her piglets roam on pasture. Sounds like I need to take an introductory course like this one! I'm jealous....

Hi Barbara & Peggy
Yep, we certainly hope to get a couple (Kune Kunes are very sociable so getting one isn't the best idea).
We are a couple of weeks away from selling up our current home, and then we will look for a suitable house on the edge of town with an orchard or paddock for the pigs.
I'm not sure at this stage that we will find what we need, but we are certainly hoping to. I know we would find pig keeping very rewarding.
Thanks for your r,r & c as always.

Nice try Christine lol We actually have a few sitters lined up, and the beauty of Kune Kunes are that they are easy care.
Pleased to hear they are popular in their native lands too. I know there are a few in France, Aus and the US also.
Thanks for dropping by

Hey Gill
We've been married 10 years, so I have received all meanings of the term pig husband you care to think of lol I thought it was about time I added to the definitions!
Yes, it was a different review to the point that I wondered about even writing it. Given the positive reaction, I'm pleased I did in the end!
Thanks as always for taking the time to comment - so when is Laos? I can't wait for the reviews!

Heh, actually the Herefordshire countryside is quite similar to that of Yorkshire; it's just a little lusher and has hedgerows rather than dry stone walls (o:
As for looking like my pets; yep I'm quite developing the stomach for it lol
Thanks for dropping by Mia.

Aah well Kenn, pigs only smell if their keeper allows it. Kune Kunes actually have a regular spot to deposit dung, and if you feed them vegetarian & tidy up regularly, then there's no real problem.
Barton Hill didn't smell of pigs in the slightest, despite there being 20 of them on site.
Of course, I'll be selling bags of manure on e-bay for evermore lol
Thanks for dropping by.

Well I guess there wasn't the time to explore everything about each other.
I'm just a country boy at heart; I might as well admit it lol

Hi Di - I think I'd probably had a little too much wine by that point lol
Shame it didn't translate well to a full review.
Thanks for your kind comments!

Re: Oh How Romantic, Chris! (Reply to this comment)

Heh - well, I guess it beats our first anniversary tour of Auchwicz (not planned, just the way the tour went).
Mel loves pigs, and it was a good way of working out whether keeping them could work out for us. We are hoping to move soon, and its given us good ideas about the type of property we need.
Less Romantic more Practical, but it's a Win:Win either way lol
Thanks for dropping by as always Deb

Re: Oink (Reply to this comment)

Hey Jack, very good question. I can imagine our piggy additions would be viewed with suspicion and considerable distaste. At least the cats would still reign supreme in-doors.
Apparently Kune Kunes don't taste that good, although their meat is prized for speciality sausage. It will be seriously off the menu if we go ahead!
Thanks for dropping by - great to see ya!

a) How are your cats going to react to a new family addition?
b) Should you ever get frustrated, I know a ham turns out nicely at 325 degrees.

I couldn't think of anything more than I would want to do on my anniversary! :) Of course I realize that if you are doing something that your wife really wants, then it indeed, was romantic!
I do love piggies. I once got trapped in a barn with about 50 sows, and they weren't cute. I was scared to death.
One of your most unique reviews!
My best,
Deb~

Great review but not nearly as funny as the last time we spoke about the pigs. Good Lord boy, your talents never cease to amaze me.

....this reveals a side to you that was never apparent in London at the meet-and-greet. Apart from the nipple-tweaking, that is. But I'd gone back to my hotel by then, of course.
Kind regards!

Suit yourself... (Reply to this comment)
by tch7
My cousin used to raise pigs on his farm, and I remember occasionally standing above the pen and kicking rocks down on to them and getting them to run around in a frenzy (hey, I was young...).
Recalling those days, I must say I'm a little puzzled why anybody would voluntarily tour a pig farm, much less pay to do so. They're still not quite as volatile smelling as the sheep or mushroom farms, but I guess I prefer my pigs roasting in the oven.
Glad you had a good time though...

Pig Husband. (Reply to this comment)
by gillandtony
When Mel describes you as a pig husband, is it as in "You are a pig ! Husband "or is it in the more general sense that you don't help with the washing up etc. etc ?
Great review. Different !!!
Looking forward to the sausages !

Aren't they just gorgeous!
They are popular pets here too and from all accounts, a long term commitment. If you ever need a pet-sitter, give me a call ... I would love to look out for your menagerie!!
My only requirement would be a ticket, don't worry about splashing out on 1st class, I can do business!!

Pulling nipples, really! HAHA!
This sounds fun. I love pigs, too (I think it has to do with my name) I love seeing them at the state fair.
Will one be joining your menagerie soon?
