The Bottom Line Prepare foods that allow your child to receive more nutrients from their food. Beware: It takes a lot of work.
Often parents decide to make their own baby food by blending and straining it themselves. Whether this decision is based on an allergy the child might have, if the parents would like to raise a vegetarian, or if the parents just want to prepare foods for their child, the foods must be prepared correctly. If the foods are prepared correctly your child would probably add more nutrients into their diet than jarred foods. So, what to do. The number one rule here is that you cannot use the microwave. Not only are you feeding your child radiated food, but you are killing any nutrients the food might have had. Choose your foods wisely. If you are not purchasing organic foods you are likely purchasing produce that has been waxed or chemicals have been added to enhance color. Choose foods that are less likely to have wax or chemicals added, such as carrots, green beans, and the like. If you cannot purchase fresh produce, the second best foods that have the highest amount of nutrients are frozen foods. Once you have chosen your foods then prepare them. To prepare these foods to keep as many nutrients as possible, you should steam them, then blend them, then strain them. It takes a lot of work to make food for a young child, especially since they can’t appreciate it as much as you do. Personally, I opted for jarred foods. I knew that I didn’t have the energy or time to make foods myself and honestly I felt that the nutrients he received in his food were greater than the foods I could prepare for him. The variety of foods offered in the jar weren’t seasonal or any more expensive than purchasing the foods and making them myself. If you do plan to make your child’s food, more power to you, just DON’T use the microwave, please. |
