Hidden Island of Tranquility response (Reply to this comment)
by nancyyh
We just returned from our 2nd vacation on Manitoulin Island. I wanted to respond to the comment about the cabins.

We went to a place last year and were very disappointed in the shabby and dirty cabin we stayed in. The place was run down but the sunsets were beautiful.

As we traveled around Manitoulin we discovered Sunset Bay resorts on Lake Kagawong were clean and decent. We booked a cabin right away. They are still making improvements to the place but it is pretty nice for camping, hunting and fishing. We had a great time.

It is hard to get around Manitoulin Island only because of the wilderness and lack of big business. But that is why we went there...We love the charm and slower pace of living.

Stores are open when they are open in some places.

Everything closes by 8 PM so you better be where you need to be as we discovered last summer.

If you expect to find a walmart nearby then this is not the place for you. They don't have many gas stations either so make sure you have a full tank of gas when you go site seeing. Many times we didn't see one car for the entire trip from one small town to another.

We took the CheeCheeman from Tobermory to the Island. On the boat they have an immense collection of brochures to find out what is available on the island.

The people are friendly and eager to please. Be sure to take a map. (The GPS is wrong 80% of the time.)

Tobermory is a small but busy little town with lots of shops, art galleries and cafe's. They have glass bottom boat rides too.

If you want a peaceful quiet vacation, not many people, beautiful scenery, sunsets and fresh air most of Manitoulin is the place for you.

Bridal Veil Falls in Kagawong is very pretty and worth the visit if you are already on the island and like to walk trails. The town of Kagawong is small with a few shops and galleries.

A lot of the land is owned by First Nation People so please respect their privacy and stay off their land unless invited such as Pow Wows and trading posts.
